With Bitcoin’s price dropping substantially in recent weeks, traders are turning to altcoins for potential opportunities. Can altcoins revive the crypto market — or is this just another wave of hype?

Several new ETF applications have been submitted to the SEC for 

 and Dogecoin. Paz Gonzalez sees this trend as a reflection of past crypto cycles, while Kendrick is particularly bullish on XRP and Solana. Given XRP’s legal battle with the SEC last year (in which a federal judge ruled in Ripple Labs’ favor), Kendrick believes XRP has an edge over other altcoins when it comes to ETF approval. Numerous investment firms have already filed for XRP ETFs, and its use as a payment solution gives it strong real-world utility.

Kendrick notes that Solana (SOL) is the next-strongest contender. It boasts more use cases than XRP, but lacks the regulatory advantage and sheer number of ETF applications. Meanwhile, critics point to Solana’s relatively small validator set and to concerns over its potential centralization.

Paz Gonzalez agrees with Kendrick that XRP is the most likely crypto asset to receive the first spot ETF approval. However, she sees Litecoin (LTC) as next in line. Often referred to as Bitcoin’s “little sister,” Litecoin has long been positioned as a payment-focused cryptocurrency.

Speculation, barriers to institutional acceptance — andhype

Retail speculation tends to be higher for altcoins than for Bitcoin, and Gonzalez attributes the recent surge in altcoin activity to this trend. pointing out that institutions have historically been cautious and have taken years to fully embrace Bitcoin. Before backing altcoins, they need to see substantial trading volume and a shift in market sentiment.

Kendrick predicts that the altcoins currently being considered for ETFs may experience speculative spikes in the short term. He cites Dogecoin’s price surge following ETF-related news, which was quickly followed by a decline. He expects this pattern to hold across other altcoins, but foresees a sustained long-term rise after ETF approvals are finalized.

However, Gonzalez remains skeptical about meme coins securing ETFs, arguing that they lack real utility. The only exception, she suggests, might be Dogecoin — given Elon Musk’s influence and ties to Donald Trump. Even then, she believes an ETF would only be viable if Dogecoin eventually finds adoption as a legitimate payment method, or serves another functional purpose.

Can altcoin ETFs receive the same support as blue-chip crypto ETFs?

Kendrick highlights Bitcoin’s status as the crypto market’s staple cryptocurrency. Even with the rise of altcoin ETFs, he remains confident that Bitcoin will continue to dominate the market.

Gonzalez points out that the introduction of crypto ETFs has created greater regulation and centralization within the crypto market — shifting away from the original principles of decentralization on which cryptocurrency was built. She believes that as more ETFs are introduced and adoption grows, this trend toward regulation and centralization will only accelerate.

According to Gonzalez, the primary purpose of crypto ETFs is to bring institutional investors into the crypto space. Moreover, she notes that ETFs serve as an entry point for retail traders. Many traditional investors are hesitant to put their money into an industry that still operates in a legal gray area, thus making regulated ETFs a more appealing option.

Traditional investors typically take a conservative approach, prioritizing diversification in order to manage risk. Kendrick highlights the potential for a crypto index ETF, similar to those in the stock market, which often outperform individual stocks over time. He believes it’s only a matter of time before an index ETF is introduced for cryptocurrencies.

Gonzalez reinforces this idea, noting that investing in individual stocks — or cryptos — requires extensive research in order to understand their fundamentals. For many investors, this process can be overwhelming. An index ETF simplifies the decision-making process, offering a diversified and lower-risk approach to crypto exposure.

Gonzalez also brings up the classic trading mantra, “Buy the rumor, sell the news.” She and Kendrick both agree that XRP is a strong candidate for one of the first altcoin spot ETFs. From Gonzalez’s perspective, buying early could maximize potential gains. But even without a potential ETF approval, she sees XRP as a solid long-term investment, and emphasizes the importance of using 

Could ETFs ignite the next bull run? How to position yourself

Recently, both Bitcoin and altcoins have faced turbulence, with altcoin spot ETFs now taking center stage. Gonzalez and Kendrick take a step back to examine the broader macroeconomic landscape. Gonzalez notes that altcoins are moving in sync with the overall market — which isn’t in great shape. While crypto remains a strong and innovative sector, it’s still a niche market, and with the general economy in decline, conditions aren’t ideal for altcoin ETFs in the short term, though they do hold long-term potential.

Many investors have been anticipating a bull run, but Gonzalez cautions against comparing the current market to events of four years ago. The crypto landscape is still evolving, and it’s crucial to adapt. Trying to predict market movements with past cycles in mind isn’t always reliable. Instead, she believes success in a bear market comes down to having the right strategy. For her, that means executing quick buy-and-sell trades to capture small, consistent profits.

Kendrick, however, takes a different approach. He favors a buy-and-hold strategy, supplemented by 

 to hedge against downside risk. He also steers clear of highly volatile tokens unless he’s trading on a short-term basis.

February 2025 presented a unique landscape for cryptocurrency volatility, particularly for Bitcoin (BTC). The month can be divided into three distinct phases: a volatile beginning, a calm middle and a tumultuous end. At the outset, BTC witnessed significant price corrections due to macroeconomic factors, particularly President Trump’s announcements regarding tariffs on neighboring countries. These announcements triggered sharp reactions within both crypto and traditional markets, leading to a spike in realized volatility.

Midway through the month, however, BTC's volatility dropped to a historically low level of 29%. This period of subdued volatility was notable, as it marked the lowest level of realized volatility BTC had experienced in nearly 18 months. This calm phase belied the underlying tensions in the market, as traders remained cautious but still anticipated further developments regarding economic policies. The low volatility during this period reflected a temporary stabilization, but it was clear that external factors were still at play, creating an environment ripe for speculation.

As February 2025 drew to a close, volatility surged again, largely driven by macroeconomic uncertainty and specific developments in the crypto space. By the end of the month, Bitcoin’s price had fallen below $80K, and Ethereum (ETH) had lost all of its gains since the November 2024 US elections. The dogs are out to play in the crypto world! Here's a look at the lesser-known cousin of SHIB and DOGE: the Leash coin (LEASH).

With crypto success stories popping up left and right, the hype and desire to hop aboard crypto trends has never been stronger. In particular, more people are buying altcoins, which tend to be less volatile than their mainstream counterparts (e.g., 

). Capitalizing on this trend, some developers have forged cryptocurrencies widely referred to as 

A shitcoin is so named because it doesn’t solve any problems in the crypto space, and its value fluctuates based purely on hype. For the most part, it’s perceived to be useless — hence the scatological reference.

However, it’s important to note that not all shitcoins are created equal. In this article, let’s focus on one particular animal-based shitcoin: the LEASH coin.

Launched in August 2020, the Shiba Inu cryptocurrency (SHIB) was marketed as a token to compete directly with the popular 

Riding on the success of the cryptocurrency, 

 — Shiba Inu’s own decentralized crypto exchange — was launched in June 2021. On this exchange, users can perform activities related to its three native tokens: Shiba Inu (SHIB), Doge Killer (LEASH) and Bone (BONE). You can also use ShibaSwap to transact altcoins.

The screenshot below lists the activities you can perform to obtain rewards on the exchange. 

Two notable aspects of ShibaSwap are its simplicity and convenience. Novice traders/investors can visit the platform, connect decentralized wallets such as 

 and easily perform activities like stake, swap, or provide liquidity to the platform to earn rewards. 

LEASH is a native token on ShibaSwap. Shiba Inu’s success has allowed the Shiba Network to launch the two other tokens in its ecosystem, Doge Killer (LEASH) and Bone (BONE). All three tokens are currently circulating in the Shiba ecosystem.

Initially, the Shiba network launched the LEASH token as a 

, but for a cryptocurrency’s price, not tied to any fiat currency. 

For instance, Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin whose value is pegged to the U.S. dollar. With a typical stablecoin, one USDT’s value will always be equal to the value of one USD. When it comes to rebase coins, however, the token is pegged to the value of another crypto token. 

LEASH was originally launched as a rebase coin that’s pegged to the value of Dogecoin. It’s since been “unleashed,” so to speak, as its team has altered the use case of this crypto to support its ecosystem.

LEASH is designed to be different from its canine pals, SHIB and BONE. Its total supply is capped at just 100,000, compared to SHIB’s 

One of the fundamental purposes of this token is to incentivize liquidity providers (LPs) and even offer special rewards. One such example is as follows.

When you buy LEASH (swap them with other tokens you hold) and stake or bury them, you receive a reward in the form of xLEASH tokens. As a holder of xLEASH tokens, you become a part of xLEASH’s liquidity pool. 

As a member of this pool, you receive 0.5% of all BONE per block added to its original blockchain. As mentioned before, 

 is also a native token of the Shiba Network. The rewards to the stakers or LP contributors are mixed among LEASH, SHIB and BONE, thereby attaching a use case to each of them.

Also, by providing liquidity with your LEASH tokens, you’re entitled to a predetermined share of the LEASH/ETH ShibaSwap liquidity pool. 

Dogecoin and Shiba Inu have similar market caps. At the time of this writing, 

 ranks ninth on CoinMarketCap, at a little over $38 billion, whereas Dogecoin (DOGE) is placed tenth with a $36 billion 

In terms of total supply, LEASH is very different from the other two. While DOGE and SHIB have a total supply in billions and trillions, respectively, the total supply of LEASH is capped as noted at 100,000. This difference is reflected directly in the tokens’ prices. As of this writing, the value of one DOGE or SHIB is measured in cents, while the price of one LEASH coin is about $4,000.

One similarity the three coins share is that they all belong to the 

Doge Killer has a maximum supply of around 100,000 LEASH tokens. At the time of writing, LEASH is trading at $3,070, down 0.4% compared to its previous trading day. LEASH is currently being traded on 21 active markets, with close to $15 million traded in the last 24 hours. Although the figure has yet to be verified, the LEASH coin’s self-reported market cap is approximately 330 million.

Is Doge Killer (LEASH) a Good Investment? 

LEASH was originally launched in April 2021 on the UniSwap platform. During its 

, the price of one LEASH was around $562. In less than six months, its price exploded: its value increased by 700%, with one LEASH currently standing at around $3,000. The LEASH token recorded its 

 of $8,983 in May 2021, in the middle of this year’s “great bull run.”

The success of LEASH depends on the success of its parent network, ShibaSwap. If everything goes right with the ShibaSwap exchange and LEASH survives the bear market, it could reach $5,000 by the end of 2021, and 

 by the end of 2022. These predictions are guided by the current popularity of Shiba Inu and the rise of other 

Overall, LEASH could yield you returns if you time the market correctly. Whether you choose to take the risk is entirely up to you. 

There is no direct way for crypto enthusiasts to buy, hold or trade the LEASH token. However, they can swap their existing tokens for LEASH on various platforms. The first thing to do is install a decentralized wallet, like MetaMask, on a phone or PC browser. That will allow users to buy or sell LEASH tokens on decentralized exchanges like 

Alternatively, users can swap existing tokens like Ethereum, Bitcoin, or even shitcoins like Shiba Inu for LEASH tokens on the ShibaSwap exchange (see screenshot below).

All you need to do is hold some Ether in your MetaMask wallet, link it to decentralized exchanges like Uniswap or ShibaSwap, and perform the swap using the ERC20 network. You can also hold/store your LEASH tokens in the safe and secure MetaMask wallet.

Tokens such as SHIB and LEASH and ecosystems such as ShibaSwap add diversity to the crypto space and keep things interesting. We can’t deny the fact that they contribute greatly to the 

 space by attracting public attention and raising awareness of cryptos. However, there are too many unknowns to determine the true value of this fairly young altcoin. Volatility is inevitable in the crypto space, and one big bearish 

 could be all it takes to wipe out your life savings. Do remember to exercise caution should you choose to invest in or trade LEASH.
