Over the past few years, the Ethereum Network has become the standard blockchain for decentralized applications (DApps). Unfortunately, some of these are slowing processing times and raising gas fees. The Polygon Network has presented itself as a solution to these problems.
Polygon is a framework for creating blockchain networks compatible with Ethereum. Transferring assets to this network by using the Polygon Bridge allows you to easily build scalable DApps with higher speeds and lower prices.
Some popular DeFi platforms like Uniswap and QuickSwap have already been deployed on the Polygon network.
If you own a MetaMask crypto wallet, and want to store your assets securely, quickly and cheaply, try connecting it to the Polygon Network. Our step-by-step guide will show you how to add Polygon's mainnet in minutes.
Not everyone has a MetaMask wallet, but it’s easy to set one up. MetaMask is one of the most reliable crypto wallets. It allows you to store tokens and NFTs, so it can accommodate most of your needs.
MetaMask is available to install on Chrome, Android, and iOS. You can download the software from the official MetaMask website. Here's how to download the MetaMask extension in just a few steps:
After downloading and clicking on Install, you'll be sent to the MetaMask welcome page. Next, click on Get Started to begin the installation process.
Click on the Create a Wallet option. If you've already used a crypto wallet, you can import the seed phrase from there. Select the Import Wallet option to do this.
Next, create a secure password to log into your MetaMask wallet.
After you’ve created a password, MetaMask will give you your wallet's seed phrase. Make sure to read everything carefully if you're not sure how the wallet works. Then, you’ll be led to the Secret Recovery Phrase page, where you’ll need to click on the lock to see your seed phrase. Store the phrase the traditional way — offline, and if necessary, under lock and key, so that you’ll never lose it.
Next, to confirm your seed phrase, you'll need to repeat it by picking the words at the bottom of the next page in the correct order. Once you're done with that, click on Confirm to continue.
Now your MetaMask wallet will be set up and ready to use. All you need to do is click on All Done, and you're ready to use your new wallet.
Let's move on to see how you can add Polygon Network to MetaMask.
The MetaMask crypto wallet works with Ethereum-compatible networks. That's why connecting to other networks requires a separate procedure in the wallet's settings.
For example, the Polygon Mainnet (formerly known as Matic Network) works on Ethereum. However, it’s not included by default on MetaMask.
If you want to use Polygon Network, you'll need to manually connect it to your MetaMask wallet. There are two specific ways to do this. We'll guide you through both of them.
To add the network manually, first, you need to go to the PolygonScan website. Once there, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Add Polygon Network.
This will send an automatic MetaMask notification to your browser. You need to click on Approve and you'll then be switched to Polygon's Mainnet.
Finally, close the dialog — and you're all set.
In case this method doesn't work, you can also add Polygon Network manually by following the steps below.
To add the Polygon Mainnet, click on the network selection drop-down menu in your MetaMask extension and select Network. Then, click on Custom RPC to open a new form.
You'll see two tabs at the top: Settings and Info. In the Settings tab, you need to input the following:
Network Name: Polygon Mainnet
New RPC URL: https://polygon-rpc.com
ChainID: 137
Symbol: MATIC
Block Explorer URL: https://polygonscan.com/
Once you add the above information, you need to click on Save. You’ll then be directed to your account screen with the MATIC icon and MATIC token balance showing. You can now use your MetaMask wallet with the Polygon Network.
If you want to add a custom token not yet available on MetaMask, you can go to PolygonScan, find the token you want, and copy the token's contract address. If the token isn’t on PolygonScan, you can try Etherscan instead, or find the social contract listed on the token’s official site.
Afterward, go back to your MetaMask wallet homepage, and find the Assets tab on the bottom. There, you'll see the Import Tokens option. You’ll need to click on it.
Switch to Custom Tokens at the top, and enter the token’s contract address.
In most cases, the token symbol and decimal will autofill. But if they don't, you’ll need to head to the network's block explorer and find the token. The symbol and decimal will be displayed there.
Click on Add Custom Token to proceed. The wallet will automatically send you to a confirmation page where you can click on Import Tokens to finish the process.
After that, you'll find the newly added token in your MetaMask wallet.
Now you know how to add Polygon to MetaMask. Thankfully, it's a simple process. After setting up everything, you can start making transactions, storing NFTs, and interacting with different DeFi DApps. You can even swap your tokens without leaving the MetaMask extension.
Of course, the MetaMask wallet isn't just made for the Ethereum and Polygon networks. It supports the entire EVM (Ethereum virtual machine) ecosystem. Following our guide, you can easily add more chains, and start exploring the world of decentralized applications.
