The company behind the project, Zircuit Ltd., was founded in 2021 in Canada by Dr. Martin Derka, Jan Gorzny and Angel Xu. Zircuit's testnet was launched in November 2023, but made headlines in April 2024 when the project reported that its 

 (TVL) had soared past $2 billion. While testnet TVLs are more a gauge of future potential for a blockchain than an indicator of its existing worth, the news attracted the attention of industry observers toward the platform. Following its highly publicized testnet success, Zircuit launched the first phase of its mainnet in August 2024. This was followed by the launch of the platform's native token, ZRC, in November 2024.

As a typical rollup, Zircuit uses an off-chain sequencer node to batch and organize Layer 2 transactions for subsequent posting to the underlying Ethereum Layer 1. The batches have ZK validity proofs attached to them to signal to Layer 1 validators that they’re free from fraudulent transactions. Zircuit's architecture also includes prover nodes, whose job is to produce these validity proofs.

However, unlike other rollups using ZK proofs (also known as validity proofs), Zircuit doesn't generate validity proofs for every block of transactions. Instead, some blocks have pre-generated template proofs, while others go through the process of having a dedicated validity proof created for them. After a few blocks featuring validity proofs, there are several more that utilize template proofs. The image below illustrates this approach.

The key reason Zircuit has adopted this form of proof design is that the process of generating ZK proofs is computationally intensive. By using template proofs for some of the blocks in a sequence, Zircuit can reduce the overall computational overhead. However, the project’s team has stated that the template proof model is temporary, and will be phased out in the future. At that stage, the platform will move to generating ZK proofs for each block.

Zircuit features a highly modular design whereby provers — responsible for generating validity proofs on the platform — can easily be plugged into or removed from the network. This modular approach is distinct from the standard ZK rollup design, in which provers are more tightly and less flexibly integrated into the overall architecture.

As noted earlier, Zircuit uses a dedicated sequencer to organize and batch transactions into blocks. The platform also applies AI-driven monitoring at the sequencer level (the Sequencer Level Security, or SLS) to spot and exclude fraudulent transactions before they’re finalized on Layer 2.

When transactions are first posted to Zircuit, they enter the 

 — a temporary area from which the sequencer picks and organizes individual transactions into blocks. The mempool is being monitored at all times, using AI algorithms to identify suspicious transactions. If a transaction in the mempool raises a flag, it's quarantined and assessed for validity before the sequencer can include it in a block. The image below shows how this process works.

One of the distinct features of Zircuit is its hybrid architecture, which combines the properties of optimistic and ZK rollups. At the base level, Zircuit is built using Optimism's Bedrock development framework, a technology popular for optimistic rollup networks. However, the use of ZK proofs — or, to be more precise, a combination of validity proofs and template proofs — ensures that Zircuit enjoys a security level that standard optimistic rollups normally can't match.

The use of AI-based SLS provides robust security to Zircuit, complementing the already highly secure ZK proof system. Very few Layer 2 networks in the industry currently feature anything similar, making the platform a true pioneer of AI use for sequencer-level operations.

Like any rollup based on Optimism Bedrock, Zircuit enjoys EVM compatibility. This allows for smooth interoperability with the underlying Ethereum Layer 1. EVM compatibility also makes it easy for developers familiar with Ethereum’s environment to develop Zircuit-based DApps, or to port existing Ethereum applications to the platform. Developers can take advantage of technologies commonly used for Ethereum (e.g., the Solidity programming language and the Hardhat development framework) to build Zircuit applications and smart contracts.

Zircuit Bridge is a native bridging solution designed to easily transfer tokens between Ethereum and Zircuit. It boasts high security, low transaction fees and fast transfers, and allows users to move a variety of cryptocurrencies between Ethereum and Zircuit, including ETH, 

) and LRTs like Super Symbiotic LRT (weETHs). As of late November 2024, the total number of cryptos supported by the bridge is close to 30.

Zircuit has launched a reward program called Zircuit Points. Users can earn these Points by staking supported assets, and by participating in the Build to Earn initiative (more on this below). Accumulated points will be converted to ZRC tokens in the future. Points also create the opportunity to qualify for token airdrops.

The primary way for most users to earn Zircuit points is via 

. The Zircuit Staking program lets you stake LSTs, LRTs, popular stablecoins, some wrapped tokens and Ether (ETH) to earn points. Using LSTs and LRTs, you can earn yields (along with native Zircuit staking APRs and Points) from the respective staking and restaking platforms that issue these assets.

Zircuit Points earned via staking have different multipliers, depending upon the asset. For example, Ether has a multiplier of 0.5, while LSTs, LRTs and stablecoins have a multiplier of 1. Multipliers for different LST and LRT assets may be subject to change in the future.

Build to Earn is another way to qualify for Zircuit Points. The program allows developers to contribute to the Zircuit ecosystem and earn Points in a number of ways, including:

Launched in November 2024, ZRC is the platform's native cryptocurrency. It's an 

 asset deployed on both Zircuit and Ethereum Layer 1. ZRC is mainly used for reward distributions, and participation in token airdrops for ecosystem DApps. Currently, transaction fees on the network are paid in Ether. It's possible that, in the future, ZRC might be used for some transaction fee payments.

ZRC is also used for rewards under the Gas Rebate program. As users conduct transactions on the platform, they 

. Zircuit’s Gas Rebate program provides rebates to offset some of the incurred fees. The amount of ZRC earned as a rebate is proportional to the amount spent on gas in ETH; the project's documentation states that for each ETH spent on gas, the user earns 125% in ZRC. All kinds of gas fee payments qualify for the rebate, including ordinary asset transfers and transactions involving interaction with Zircuit DApps.

ETH Open Interest Grows While BTC’s Declines

ETH is outperforming BTC following the announcement of SEC Chair Gary Gensler’s departure, as evidenced in perpetual swap markets. BTC open interest has decreased from last week's highs, while ETH contracts have increased. Additionally, ETH trade volumes constitute a larger share of daily trading as compared to much of the past six months, despite an overall dip in trade volumes this week. The gradual decline in BTC open interest, without a surge in trading activity, indicates a strategic repositioning, rather than a wave of liquidations.

BTC Option Curve Inversion Deepens as Price Retreats

The pullback in the spot BTC price from the $100K target has led to a flat ATM volatility term structure, with short-tenor options dropping below 60%.

 and other token-capable chains by facilitating the efficient issuance of tokens for asset transfer. RVN tokens issued by Ravencoin can represent real world assets or

For its part, Ravencoin isn’t on a quest to reinvent the wheel. After all, there are already plenty of token standards for the Ethereum blockchain, such as 

, ERC-223 and ERC-721, just to name a few. However, according to the Ravencoin team, there’s currently a lack of specialization in regard to the transfer and exchange of assets.

Arguably the most pronounced problem identified by the folks at Ravencoin is the need for a base currency, such as ETH, to cover transaction costs. If a network’s fees are high, asset transfer unnecessarily involves added steps, hassles and costs. Ravencoin strives to create a network specifically optimized to seamlessly transfer all digital assets and real world goods.

Beyond this, Ravencoin points to its security model and decentralization-friendly consensus mechanism as primary highlights and advantages over other crypto platforms.

The Ravencoin project was first introduced on the blogging platform 

 in November 2017. In the initial post, the team behind the new digital currency project drew a connection to the popular 

 TV show. Shortly after, Ravencoin was born.

 and created via a fork in the Bitcoin code, Ravencoin launched just two months later, in early January 2018. Its launch date, not so coincidentally, just happened to be on the ninth anniversary of Bitcoin’s launch in 2009.

Built as an open-source project and decentralized development community in the spirit of 

 (ICO). They also didn’t pre-mine, have a pre-sale or implement any master nodes.

Instead, similar to Bitcoin’s launch, the Ravencoin team kept its token supply completely democratized, without setting aside any tokens for investors via private or public token sale. In fact, in an effort to provide more equitable and democratic access, no RVN tokens were allocated for the developers, 

), or any other early project participants. The crypto protocol is completely open-source, so virtually anyone can contribute to its code.

The Ravencoin blockchain was developed to simplify the transfer of unique assets from one person to another. While transferring digital assets via the Bitcoin blockchain can be done, Bitcoin’s existing nodes are unaware of embedded assets in the code. This also means Bitcoin must be involved with every asset transaction.

Ethereum also allows asset transfers. However, with Ethereum, there’s no way to differentiate between assets with the same unique name.

With Ravencoin, you won’t run into these problems. Not only can you exchange assets without the need for Bitcoin or another base currency, but you can benefit from a Bitcoin-like platform that project developers describe as being “fully asset aware.”

While the code for the Ravencoin blockchain was copied from that of Bitcoin, its proprietary network and asset are unique, with their own unique protocol rules. Several other parameters and details were modified in order to incentivize communication between network users, and the issuing of RVN tokens.

To ensure its network remains in sync, Ravencoin utilizes KAWPOW, a variation of the popularly used PoW consensus mechanism. In an effort to make mining Ravencoin tokens on its network easier, secure the network, validate transfers, and mint and distribute RVN, KAWPOW is used by each of the networked computers running Ravencoin software.

We’ll discuss KAWPOW further in just a minute. For now, however, just know that since Ravencoin tokens (RVN) are needed to create new assets, they play a vital role in operating and maintaining the Ravencoin network.

To create new crypto assets, token issuers must provide their token with a unique name, and 

 a specific amount of RVN. Upon creation, special token characteristics — such as the number of tokens issued and its fungibility — can also be defined.

Therefore, by burning and buying RVN, users are able to issue unique custom tokens with specific features and predefined monetary policies. Token issuers can freely distribute RVN rewards (to token holders and miners) as a “thank you” for contributing to decentralization by beefing up the blockchain with new data.

Ravencoin’s mission is to help facilitate decentralization through greater specialization in asset exchange. To this end, it employs a number of unique features that differentiate it from other digital assets and asset transfer platforms primarily driven by 

Similar to Bitcoin’s PoW consensus mechanism, KAWPOW is used by networked computers running Ravencoin software to secure and sync the network, validate transactions and facilitate the distribution of newly minted RVN.

 that improve Ravencoin’s distribution mechanism. Most importantly, however, the algorithm lowers the barrier of entry for those interested in mining on the Ravencoin network.

By resisting the use of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and facilitating the use of consumer-grade 

 the network’s token, virtually anyone is invited to mine — with no need for both expansive and expensive hardware.

In promoting decentralization, KAWPOW even takes things a step further by leaving network validation in the hands of the community, rather than a select group. In doing so, the network’s protocol is more impartial and unbiased than those of smart contracts and other blockchain networks.

Ravencoin set out to establish a crypto solution similar to Bitcoin, but one that was fully asset-aware. This led to the development of its 

This asset-aware system provides users with three major advantages:

Only a system that is fully asset aware can seamlessly achieve these three things.

Ravencoin also facilitates the payment of rewards — and even dividends — in its native token. Whenever an issuer wants, RVN rewards can be issued to a single token holder or automatically divided and sent to asset holders.

For example, an overworked executive with a passion for tacos and the open road could create a token representing their new “taco truck” business. Let’s say they create 20,000 TACO tokens at $0.10 per token. Given this scenario, $2,000 could be raised to help fund the business. With a single command, the token issuer can send reward or dividend payments in RVN.

This is just one example of the flexibility — built into Ravencoin — which blockchains operating via smart contracts typically lack.

As noted, token issuers can distribute RVN to their token holders as a way of incentivizing certain actions, issuing dividends or rewarding community involvement. In addition to defining whom to reward, a token issuer can also give their token special characteristics which define its fungibility, the number of tokens issued, how many decimal places to fraction it to, and so on.

In other words, the first person to create and name the token is the owner of the project, and can define its unique characteristics, including its name.

To issue new tokens and create new digital assets, a predetermined amount of RVN must be burned, and a unique name must be given to each token. No two tokens can have the same name. Therefore, if a token is issued with the name “Stripe,” for example, no other token can be issued with the same name.

One problem common among tokens/digital assets is the lack of available communication between token issuers and token holders. In addition to its strong mining community, comprehensive distribution system and high level of asset security, Ravencoin also solves this ongoing communication problem.

Despite being a Bitcoin code fork, the Ravencoin network is optimized to provide messaging capabilities and voting features. This means asset issuers/token creators can message stake/token holders whenever it’s time to vote on proposals.

Game developers, activist organizations, nonprofits, corporations and virtually any other entities can issue tokens for certain users and message them directly. Unlike email and other messaging systems, the messaging is only enabled for token holders, which makes the token transferable.

As owners of transferable tokens, RVN token holders can assign their vote to other network users. They can also sell their stake of the token and community whenever they decide.

With today’s existing financial systems, communicating with shareholders — let alone holding a vote — is tremendously difficult. A Nasdaq-listed company, for example, would have to spend a fortune just acquiring the mailing addresses of all of its shareholders. When it does, information on voting procedures and a proxy voting form must be sent out via snail mail. It’s borderline ridiculous.

To say Ravencoin has simplified the process would be a gross understatement. With Ravencoin, RVN tokens are created and distributed to represent votes. These vote tokens can be assigned to individual holders. Then, these token holders can cast votes simply by sending tokens to certain addresses on Ravencoin’s network, after which the votes are tallied.
