Morpho's high level of customizability is a significant departure from the typical model used on decentralized lending and borrowing platforms. On most other protocols, there are fixed parameters governing the lending and borrowing process; e.g., only certain collateral assets, lending assets or LLTV rates are allowed. In contrast, Morpho lets you customize all of these options, giving lending market creators an unmatched degree of freedom. The protocol offers the following key benefits to users, developers and market operators:

While Morpho is currently the platform's flagship product, the legacy Morpho Optimizers continues as a key offering in the platform's product line. Morpho Optimizers are add-on layers to the Aave and Compound lending pools. They can be used to facilitate a peer-to-peer match between lenders and borrowers. Since typical lending pools — including on platforms like Aave and Compound — are often heavily skewed with more lenders than borrowers, both parties end up paying excessive fees. Borrowers have to confront high costs due to the need to service the many lenders in the pool. In turn, lenders fight for the meager scraps left over from insufficient numbers of borrowers.

By using a P2P matching mechanism, Morpho Optimizers effectively takes the lender and borrower away from pool-based interaction and establishes a direct relationship between them. This allows users to borrow assets at cheaper rates, while also delivering better APYs for lenders. If either party withdraws from the direct lending relationship, both parties have the option to use the standard lending pools on Aave and Compound as a fallback.

The platform's third core product, Morpho Vaults (covered in more detail below) utilizes the underlying protocol and provides a way to lend through carefully curated market options at different risk profiles. This can suit lenders who are less proficient in using fully customized markets, but still prefer to take advantage of the lending opportunities offered by Morpho.

In order to create a custom lending market on Morpho, you need to have some technical proficiency and, preferably, knowledge of Solidity, the programming language that the protocol uses for its smart contracts. As noted earlier, developers can create a custom market by supplying five base parameters — a collateral asset, an asset offered for lending, an oracle, a preferred IRM and an LLTV. The first four of these normally require an Ethereum smart contract address to be specified. For the collateral and lending assets, these are the addresses for the tokens' contracts. The selected oracle is also usually established via a pointer to its smart contract address, although oracle-less hard-coded prices for the collateral and lent assets are acceptable. Morpho also maintains Ethereum addresses for each IRM whitelisted by the protocol's governance; developers can use these when choosing a preferred IRM.

The last value, LLTV, is a hard-coded figure that defines the threshold beyond which a loan becomes unhealthy due to its poor 

. Liquidators on Morpho are protocol actors who are incentivized to cover bad debts in return for collateral, similar to the method used on many other lending platforms. They’re allowed to liquidate up to 100% of the debt. In return, liquidators receive the debt's collateral, as well as an additional incentive for their work.

Since Morpho is an oracle-agnostic protocol without a built-in oracle, each market can have its own oracle that sources prices for the collateral and lending assets from external sources. Developers are completely free in that regard, and can even hard-code asset prices for the market if they don't wish to use a price oracle at all. Naturally, an oracle is preferred for maintaining the most up-to-date and dynamic pricing information.

The IRM used is the only base parameter with which developers are somewhat restricted in their choice, as only whitelisted IRMs are allowed for a market. As of mid-November 2024, there’s just one whitelisted IRM that market creators can specify — the 

. This model dynamically adjusts interest rates to maintain the proportion of borrowed funds to supplied funds at close to 90%.

Morpho Vaults are a tokenized vault product that offers curated lending opportunities with varying pre-programmed risk parameters. Each vault is associated with a single loan asset, and can allocate deposits across multiple Morpho markets, thereby leveraging the overall liquidity available on the Morpho protocol. Morpho Vaults suit lenders who prefer predictable risk management over the uncertainty of completely custom markets. Each lender can earn APY rates commensurate with their chosen 

There is no limit on the number of vaults you can open on Morpho. Thus, you might even allocate funds to different vaults with significantly different risk levels to diversify your exposure.

Morpho Vaults' curated nature eliminates the need for users to spend time researching and evaluating individual markets' risk levels and return opportunities, as risk exposure is actively managed by the vault.

Since the vaults are connected to the underlying protocol, and source liquidity from it, they’re dynamically rebalanced, which helps optimize yields. Thanks to their permissionless and immutable nature, the vaults are also completely transparent. Moreover, they’re noncustodial, granting users full control over their deposited assets, which can be withdrawn at any time.

A lender deposits an asset into a Morpho Vault and receives shares of the vault as confirmation of their investment. The vaults themselves are tokenized products utilizing Ethereum's 

 standard, designed to represent tokenized vaults for yield-bearing assets. Each vault may be owned by a 

 (DAO), an individual DeFi expert or some algorithm maintained by a DeFi platform. A vault can be owned by only one entity. The owner may specify additional roles/entities for managing the vault. These roles can include one curator, one guardian and multiple allocators.

The curator is a party who sets certain limits, rules and boundaries for the vault, such as specifying asset supply limitations and enabling/disabling specific markets. Curators are instrumental in maintaining appropriate risk levels for their vaults. Assets that lenders lock in a vault are supplied to the protocol's underlying markets, based on curators' whitelists. There can only be one curator for each vault.

The role of guardian is a key vault position. A guardian protects the integrity and security of the vault. Guardians can revoke any action by the vault owner (or other entities) if they consider it to be against the interests of vault lenders. Each vault can only have one guardian, typically a DAO consisting of vault depositors.

Allocators are protocol actors whose job is to rebalance the liquidity utilized by Morpho Vaults to optimize interest rates and accessible liquidity. An allocator’s job is to rebalance and optimize the total liquidity, either manually or using bots, to best meet the needs of Morpho borrowers.

Morpho Vaults' operations aren't regulated by the protocol's governance mechanism. Each vault owner is responsible for their vault's governance model. Specific roles, such as the curator and the guardian, are designed to help in establishing transparent and secure governance procedures for a vault.

What Is the Morpho Crypto Token (MORPHO)?

The platform's native cryptocurrency, MORPHO, is envisioned as a 

. Holders of MORPHO have the right to participate in decision-making on the platform's future direction, general rules, deployment of smart contracts and allocation of funds from the treasury. Although Morpho promotes lending and borrowing markets that operate with minimal interference from the protocol's governance community, there are some general guidelines and rules through which the community needs to establish certain standards, minimum requirements or whitelists. The original MORHPO token was launched on Ethereum in June 2022 with a supply cap of 1 billion. As a result of these limitations, the project decided to relaunch the token, now on an upgraded contract. There are many reasons why the existing supply of bitcoins doesn’t correlate to the total number of bitcoins already mined.

One of the main reasons is the method of storing Bitcoin. Since the owner needs to protect their Bitcoin using 

 and passwords, there’s no way to access the stored bitcoins if the owner passes away without giving someone else access to the password. Bitcoin can also be rendered permanently inaccessible due to other errors on the part of its owners. The next time someone asks you how many bitcoins are in circulation, simply look at the circulating supply. As of this writing, that number is

Even if there were no trapped bitcoins, it’s theoretically impossible to reach the supply limit of 21 million once all the bitcoins have been mined. In reality, the final figure will be very close to Bitcoin’s supply cap because Bitcoin’s supply is never expressed in exact terms. Instead, the code Bitcoin uses rounds off decimal points to the closest integer. As a result, a supply of 6.2589 bitcoins is represented as 6 bitcoins.

Bitcoins are split into smaller units, known as satoshis. One satoshi constitutes one 1/100 millionth of a Bitcoin. Due to these smaller units — and the rounding off of figures — experts suggest the Bitcoin supply cap will be limited to 20,999,999 instead of 21 million.

Incentive to Increase Bitcoin’s Total Supply

Bitcoin mining is popular because there’s a tremendous incentive for miners who can successfully mine the maximum amount of Bitcoin for their gain. Although the incentive is paid in block rewards, besides receiving Bitcoin miners also receive a part of the transaction fees associated with the completion of a block.

After the three previous halvings, miners currently receive 6.25 BTC for confirming a block. Despite the reduction in the mining reward amount, the higher value of each Bitcoin makes up for the halving effect. Transaction fees have also increased as a result of Bitcoin going mainstream. While Bitcoin transaction fees are expected to rise, not all BTC transactions need to be settled on the blockchain. Additional layers, such as

Some experts believe that incentive isn’t an issue — because the transaction fees, which make up only 6% of the existing revenue for miners, will increase substantially, making up for the loss of Bitcoin block rewards. They still want to know what will happen when all 21 million bitcoins have been mined, and if there’s something they can do about how many bitcoins there will be in the future.

Is It Possible to Change the Bitcoin Supply Cap?

It’s theoretically possible to change the total Bitcoin supply by altering the underlying code. Since Bitcoin itself is software, experts agree that it can be changed. To do so will require developers, stakeholders and the community at large to agree to alter the code. If an agreement were to be reached, the developers would write a code to integrate those changes into the 

In order for everything to work properly, the next step would be to ensure that all nodes on the Bitcoin network either accept the changes — or are forced off of it. However, getting every node to accept the changes is no trivial task, since the Bitcoin platform was primarily designed as a standalone system that requires no changes. At that point, the developers would need to deal with a 

, which is a consensus change that makes a previously invalid behavior valid. In the perfect scenario, all the nodes would be upgraded to accept the proposed changes.

Another scenario would have only some Bitcoin users favoring the existing 21 million BTC limit. In this situation, miners and nodes who didn’t accept the change would continue to operate on the existing Bitcoin platform. These dissidents would likely compete with the new Bitcoin platform to capture market share. This is known as a 

, as it would create another chain that splits the miner base. One such example is 

Impact on Stakeholders: What Happens When All 21 Million Bitcoins Have Been Mined? 

At this time, no one can accurately predict what will happen when all the available bitcoins have been mined.

Several analysts favor using higher transaction fees to compensate for the absence of block rewards. New technologies will likely help to cut the mining cost, eventually resulting in more profit for miners. Another theory suggests that Bitcoin platforms will only be used for large transactions of very high value, offering sufficient revenue to satisfy stakeholders. Still other theories speculate about proof of stake (PoS) and mining cartels.

From a stakeholder’s perspective, the following is a brief overview of what will happen when all of the bitcoins are mined.

Miners are responsible for verifying transactions and adding new blocks to the Bitcoin network. They must solve complex mathematical puzzles, which nowadays require costly ASIC computers with substantial computational power that use a lot of electricity.

To compensate for their effort and cost to secure the network, miners are awarded block rewards and transaction fees.

Currently, most miners and mining firms use the Bitcoin block reward system to offset the cost of mining and still make a profit. But as mining rewards are halved, it’s expected that Bitcoin mining costs will eventually exceed the BTC rewards that miners make, well before the fixed supply is reached.

However, if the price of Bitcoin increases over time, it can sometimes offset a decrease in Bitcoin block rewards. Currently, using a regression model, the average cost of mining a Bitcoin is roughly $17,600, and the most efficient miners using 

 can still mine at breakeven between $7,700 and $10,560, depending on the network difficulty and cost of electricity. All miners from the previous generation of 2016 to 2018 are no longer profitable, and many of the mining rigs between 2019 and 2020 are also no longer profitable.

In the next Bitcoin halving in 2024, these breakeven prices will double if more efficient mining rigs aren’t created or cheaper sources of electricity aren’t found. This could spell trouble for miners if Bitcoin’s price doesn’t increase enough to reach those levels, creating a potential death spiral in which too many miners stop mining as it becomes unprofitable. There just won’t be enough hash power to mine sufficient blocks for the mining difficulty to readjust within two weeks.

The only question is: What happens to transaction processing fees when all the coins are mined? Theoretically, if a miner validates enough transactions, the fees earned can help compensate for missing block rewards. But the transaction fee amount will depend on the state of the network in the future.

If the current limit of 21 million isn’t breached, one of the existing scenarios will need to occur: Higher transaction fees and reduced operational costs should be enough to keep things rolling; or, at the opposite end of the spectrum, miners may form cartels to control the supply and demand of bitcoins, as practiced in oil production and in diamond mining industries.

As Bitcoin mining nears its limit, the value of Bitcoin is expected to rise. Assuming that Bitcoin remains popular, the limited supply and investment value will tempt people to use Bitcoin as an investment commodity that acts as a store of value rather than for transactional use.

The price graph of Bitcoin favors this extrapolation because its value has consistently risen, despite the decrease in reward per block. HODLers and retail investors will hoard bitcoins in their wallets instead of releasing them. These actions will further decrease the supply, and keep Bitcoin’s value high.

In the future, whenever a new crisis emerges, central banks around the world are likely to print more money to combat it, causing a devaluation of the currency. Citizens of that country may choose to use their highly inflationary local currency to
