Sui Name Service (SuiNS) enables blockchain users to register human-readable web3 names, ensuring secure, seamless transactions and a user-friendly on-chain identity.

Some people have no trouble remembering new cell phone numbers, and there are even a select few among us who wouldn't find it hard to memorize a 16-digit bank card number. However, very few people would choose to tackle the job of reliably recalling an alphanumeric blockchain address. Network addresses on 

 (ETH) are 42 characters long, while on the 

 (SUI) blockchain they span 66. These complex and length addresses are virtually impossible for most users to remember, and are among the least user-friendly features of 

 networks. Not only are long blockchain addresses distinctly user-unfriendly, but they also lead to many instances of wrongly executed transactions due to incorrectly input characters. 

Sui Name Service (NS), a solution on the Sui blockchain, has been specifically designed to tackle this problem. The service allows users to create human-readable and easy-to-remember web3 names linked to their underlying blockchain addresses. Using SuiNS, you can transact within web3 using your preferred username and, optionally, an avatar, rather than a long, complex blockchain address.

 (NS), or simply SuiNS, is a decentralized naming service that allows you to create and use a human-readable, user-friendly web3 handle to interact with the blockchain environment, instead of using a typical long and complicated network address. 

At the underlying level, your SuiNS name is linked to your blockchain address, but all the interaction and operations on the chain happen via your registered name.

SuiNS was first conceptualized and launched in 2022, inspired by the popular 

 (ENS). In many ways, SuiNS and ENS are similar, the obvious difference being that each one applies to its own respective blockchain environment. In May 2023, SuiNS was introduced on the Sui blockchain's newly launched mainnet. The service was developed and is supported by Mysten Labs, the development studio behind the Sui blockchain project. Since the beginning of the Sui blockchain's conceptualization, SuiNS has been among the core projects of the entire Sui ecosystem. As of late November 2024, SuiNS has managed to achieve the remarkable milestone of having registered nearly 330,000 names.

Using SuiNS, you can register your preferred username (as long as it's not been taken) for one year by paying a registration fee, currently charged in SUI coins. The name can be renewed at expiration for up to five years. All interactions with the blockchain environment through your wallet use your preferred username, rather than your blockchain address.

SuiNS names can be between 3 and 63 characters. Users can check the availability of their preferred handle and register it using the 

, where a lookup textbox is prominently displayed. Shorter names cost more than longer handles. As of the time of this writing (Nov 21, 2024), a three-character-long name costs 500 SUI ($1,785) and a four-character name will cost 100 SUI ($357), while names with five or more characters are priced at 20 SUI ($71.40).

A SuiNS name can only be registered for one year, but it can be renewed for up to four years (excluding the initial registration year). There's a 30-day grace period after the expiration of your SuiNS name, during which you may still renew it. If you don't renew during the grace period, your registered name will be up for grabs by anyone on the market. Optionally, you can buy an NFT avatar linked to your SuiNS name.

Thanks to SuiNS, you can enjoy short, comprehensible names for your own address, as well as the addresses of the parties with whom you transact (if they also sign up for the service). No more forgettable string combinations that are hard to read and virtually impossible to remember!

However, a SuiNS name isn't just a tool of convenience. It also represents your decentralized identity on-chain. The identity is fully owned by you, the user, rather than by a centralized entity.

SuiNS minimizes the likelihood of lost assets due to sending funds to the wrong address: short, easy-to-remember names are way less prone to incorrectly executed transactions than standard blockchain addresses.

Security is also among the benefits of SuiNS. The service runs on the Sui chain, which prides itself on developing and enforcing high-grade security standards. Among these are 

, a framework that maintains a list of malicious websites and on-chain assets, thus protecting the Sui ecosystem from 

 launched by these known nefarious entities.

The SuiNS service launched its native token, NS, on Nov 14, 2024. Initially, NS is envisioned to support 

 processes on the platform, and will also be used for purchasing and trading SuiNS names. Currently, names are traded using SUI, the blockchain's native cryptocurrency. It's likely that NS will replace SUI in this capacity in the near future. The project team has also hinted that there could be additional uses for the NS token beyond governance and payment for SuiNS names. More announcements on this issue are likely to follow.

During the initial phase of the token's existence, governance will be its most prominent function. Holders of NS will be able to vote on important issues concerning the protocol's rules and future direction. One NS equals one vote, with more NS tokens giving you a greater say in the overall decision-making process. Those who own yield-generating assets deposit their tokens into their Pendle account. Once that’s done, a PT is minted by Pendle, representing the underlying asset that was deposited. It’s important to note that PTs and YTs are valid for a limited time, and their associated assets must be claimed before their expiration dates.

Yield tokenization is Pendle’s fundamental mechanism. While the PT represents the original asset, the YT represents the expected interest earned on the underlying asset. Splitting the yield components maximizes the user’s control of those assets. A YT can be used to provide liquidity to an AMM. By doing so, a YT can generate protocol rewards and earn transaction fees. Another way to use a YT is to simulate an interest rate swap. This is done by locking in a return at a fixed rate by selling the YT immediately.

An AMM, or automated market maker, supports individual trades of crypto assets. Specifically, it’s a type of decentralized exchange (

) that algorithmically completes buy and sell orders, as compared to making direct trades with individual traders. However, a traditional AMM is flawed since it doesn’t account for time decay. Without taking time decay into account, an investor may suffer financial loss because of mispriced assets. 

Pendle resolves this issue through its unique AMM. It uses a time-decaying AMM model to optimize capital, while increasing exposure to future yields. Specifically, Pendle’s AMM makes incremental adjustments that more accurately price assets. At the same time, it prevents 

PENDLE token holders can participate in the platform’s governance. Specifically, they do this by using vePENDLE, or vote-escrowed PENDLE tokens. The vePENDLE tokens are obtained by 

 PENDLE. The specific amount of vePENDLE received is based on the staking period, which can be as long as two years. Over the course of the staking period, the value of vePENDLE in a user’s wallet decays. It will reach no value at the end of the staking period, which is when the staked tokens are unlocked.

Pendle collects a fee of 3% from all yield accrued via YT. This fee is collected as revenue and distributed pro rata to all vePENDLE holders, based on vePENDLE weight.

Adding to these opportunities for gains, vePENDLE holders have access to liquidity incentives. They vote for the allocation of liquidity incentives to different pools. Those who have voted for a pool collectively earn 80% of that pool’s swap fees.

Pendle offers greater opportunities for investors to maximize the return on their yield-bearing assets without locking up their collateral. These opportunities include minting, 

, farming and claiming. A closer look at these features is essential.

A user can mint tokens by depositing a yield-bearing asset in Pendle. Under the Markets tab on the interface, select the terms of the transaction. This includes the input asset, the desired asset and the maturity details. By doing so, the user creates a principal token and a yield token for the underlying asset. Through this minting process, the asset is separated from its future yield, and these tokens can be used separately in various ways.

Once the YT has been minted, the user has the option to sell or swap it. Depending on the movement of the underlying asset’s value, this could be highly lucrative. It also presents users with the opportunity to swap one asset for another one that may produce a higher yield going forward. The original PT can also be swapped independently. Swapping is done through the interface’s Markets section. After selecting the Swap tab, select the slippage, transaction volume, input and output assets, and maturity.

The YT may also be added to a liquidity pool. Users can review the maturity, total liquidity and annualized percentage yield (

) for each pool. By contributing to a pool, users receive liquidity pool tokens that allow them to earn liquidity incentives. Liquidity incentives can continue to be earned until the liquidity pool tokens are cashed in. The user can increase the APY through the use of vePENDLE.

Once a YT’s established expiration date passes, that token no longer has any value. The user must decide whether to redeem the asset before the expiration date, or to roll over the asset to create a new expiration date. In order to redeem the token, the user must hold both the PT and YT. Depending on the situation, this may require the user to take a liquidity provision from the pool or buy new tokens on the market. 

To claim the YT as well as rewards and swap fees, the user should click on Claim Yield and Rewards in the Markets section. By toggling through the options, the user can claim specific rewards and gas fees. The user can also select how the token will be claimed, such as through a raw token or 

Pendle stands apart from other seemingly comparable platforms through its three components. Two of these are already live: yield tokenization and AMM. The third component, governance, is still in development. 

Within a year of the platform’s launch, more than $350 million of yield trades were settled. Pendle V2 was released in late 2022 with a redesigned AMM. This updated AMM supports fixed rate trading. It also offers liquidity provisions, greater capital flexibility and improved efficiency. It establishes low slippage trades, minimal

PENDLE was launched on Apr 28, 2021 at the price of $2.11. It quickly dropped to a low of $1.08 by Apr 30, 2021 before it rose to its all-time high of $2.45 on May 5, 2021. PENDLE’s price continued to fluctuate over the following months, remaining between $0.30 and $1. There was a spike in price in the middle of August 2021, from $0.44 to $1.27, possibly due to the 

PENDLE’s price then fell once again, before rising again in the middle of October 2021 to $0.98. This is likely attributed to the

As the entire crypto market entered a downturn at the end of 2021, PENDLE’s price also fell. When the Terra LUNA crash occurred in May 2022, PENDLE dropped to a low of $0.04 and remained there throughout most of 2022. However, PENDLE’s price experienced an uptrend beginning in January 2023, as it rose from $0.04 to $0.64 in April. Despite faltering briefly, PENDLE’s price continued to climb to a peak of $0.96 on Jul 3, 2023.
