The company behind the project, Zircuit Ltd., was founded in 2021 in Canada by Dr. Martin Derka, Jan Gorzny and Angel Xu. Zircuit's testnet was launched in November 2023, but made headlines in April 2024 when the project reported that its 

 (TVL) had soared past $2 billion. While testnet TVLs are more a gauge of future potential for a blockchain than an indicator of its existing worth, the news attracted the attention of industry observers toward the platform. Following its highly publicized testnet success, Zircuit launched the first phase of its mainnet in August 2024. This was followed by the launch of the platform's native token, ZRC, in November 2024.

As a typical rollup, Zircuit uses an off-chain sequencer node to batch and organize Layer 2 transactions for subsequent posting to the underlying Ethereum Layer 1. The batches have ZK validity proofs attached to them to signal to Layer 1 validators that they’re free from fraudulent transactions. Zircuit's architecture also includes prover nodes, whose job is to produce these validity proofs.

However, unlike other rollups using ZK proofs (also known as validity proofs), Zircuit doesn't generate validity proofs for every block of transactions. Instead, some blocks have pre-generated template proofs, while others go through the process of having a dedicated validity proof created for them. After a few blocks featuring validity proofs, there are several more that utilize template proofs. The image below illustrates this approach.

The key reason Zircuit has adopted this form of proof design is that the process of generating ZK proofs is computationally intensive. By using template proofs for some of the blocks in a sequence, Zircuit can reduce the overall computational overhead. However, the project’s team has stated that the template proof model is temporary, and will be phased out in the future. At that stage, the platform will move to generating ZK proofs for each block.

Zircuit features a highly modular design whereby provers — responsible for generating validity proofs on the platform — can easily be plugged into or removed from the network. This modular approach is distinct from the standard ZK rollup design, in which provers are more tightly and less flexibly integrated into the overall architecture.

As noted earlier, Zircuit uses a dedicated sequencer to organize and batch transactions into blocks. The platform also applies AI-driven monitoring at the sequencer level (the Sequencer Level Security, or SLS) to spot and exclude fraudulent transactions before they’re finalized on Layer 2.

When transactions are first posted to Zircuit, they enter the 

 — a temporary area from which the sequencer picks and organizes individual transactions into blocks. The mempool is being monitored at all times, using AI algorithms to identify suspicious transactions. If a transaction in the mempool raises a flag, it's quarantined and assessed for validity before the sequencer can include it in a block. The image below shows how this process works.

One of the distinct features of Zircuit is its hybrid architecture, which combines the properties of optimistic and ZK rollups. At the base level, Zircuit is built using Optimism's Bedrock development framework, a technology popular for optimistic rollup networks. However, the use of ZK proofs — or, to be more precise, a combination of validity proofs and template proofs — ensures that Zircuit enjoys a security level that standard optimistic rollups normally can't match.

The use of AI-based SLS provides robust security to Zircuit, complementing the already highly secure ZK proof system. Very few Layer 2 networks in the industry currently feature anything similar, making the platform a true pioneer of AI use for sequencer-level operations.

Like any rollup based on Optimism Bedrock, Zircuit enjoys EVM compatibility. This allows for smooth interoperability with the underlying Ethereum Layer 1. EVM compatibility also makes it easy for developers familiar with Ethereum’s environment to develop Zircuit-based DApps, or to port existing Ethereum applications to the platform. Developers can take advantage of technologies commonly used for Ethereum (e.g., the Solidity programming language and the Hardhat development framework) to build Zircuit applications and smart contracts.

Zircuit Bridge is a native bridging solution designed to easily transfer tokens between Ethereum and Zircuit. It boasts high security, low transaction fees and fast transfers, and allows users to move a variety of cryptocurrencies between Ethereum and Zircuit, including ETH, 

) and LRTs like Super Symbiotic LRT (weETHs). As of late November 2024, the total number of cryptos supported by the bridge is close to 30.

Zircuit has launched a reward program called Zircuit Points. Users can earn these Points by staking supported assets, and by participating in the Build to Earn initiative (more on this below). Accumulated points will be converted to ZRC tokens in the future. Points also create the opportunity to qualify for token airdrops.

The primary way for most users to earn Zircuit points is via 

. The Zircuit Staking program lets you stake LSTs, LRTs, popular stablecoins, some wrapped tokens and Ether (ETH) to earn points. Using LSTs and LRTs, you can earn yields (along with native Zircuit staking APRs and Points) from the respective staking and restaking platforms that issue these assets.

Zircuit Points earned via staking have different multipliers, depending upon the asset. For example, Ether has a multiplier of 0.5, while LSTs, LRTs and stablecoins have a multiplier of 1. Multipliers for different LST and LRT assets may be subject to change in the future.

Build to Earn is another way to qualify for Zircuit Points. The program allows developers to contribute to the Zircuit ecosystem and earn Points in a number of ways, including:

Launched in November 2024, ZRC is the platform's native cryptocurrency. It's an 

 asset deployed on both Zircuit and Ethereum Layer 1. ZRC is mainly used for reward distributions, and participation in token airdrops for ecosystem DApps. Currently, transaction fees on the network are paid in Ether. It's possible that, in the future, ZRC might be used for some transaction fee payments.

ZRC is also used for rewards under the Gas Rebate program. As users conduct transactions on the platform, they 

. Zircuit’s Gas Rebate program provides rebates to offset some of the incurred fees. The amount of ZRC earned as a rebate is proportional to the amount spent on gas in ETH; the project's documentation states that for each ETH spent on gas, the user earns 125% in ZRC. All kinds of gas fee payments qualify for the rebate, including ordinary asset transfers and transactions involving interaction with Zircuit DApps.

This positive momentum extends to several large-cap altcoins previously scrutinized by the SEC, as indicated by bullish funding rates for long positions.

ETH Open Interest Grows While BTC’s Declines

ETH is outperforming BTC following the announcement of SEC Chair Gary Gensler’s departure, as evidenced in perpetual swap markets. BTC open interest has decreased from last week's highs, while ETH contracts have increased. Additionally, ETH trade volumes constitute a larger share of daily trading as compared to much of the past six months, despite an overall dip in trade volumes this week. The gradual decline in BTC open interest, without a surge in trading activity, indicates a strategic repositioning, rather than a wave of liquidations.

BTC Option Curve Inversion Deepens as Price Retreats

The pullback in the spot BTC price from the $100K target has led to a flat ATM volatility term structure, with short-tenor options dropping below 60%. 

This trend continues the correlation between term structure inversion and BTC spot price returns observed since the U.S. election on November 5, 2024

. The decline in front-end volatility aligns with lower realized volatility levels. While demand for short-tenor options has moderated, there hasn't been a notable change in open interest for calls or puts. Instead, their growth has stalled at the week's start.

The arrival of early token-swap and lending protocols signified the emergence of the 

 (DeFi) industry in 2017–2018. However, it didn't take long for more advanced forms of trading — including 

 — to appear on the menu. Decentralized derivatives platforms flourished, quickly becoming a prominent niche within the DeFi ecosystem. Fast-forward to mid-2024, and the derivatives category of the DeFi market is approaching a 

Yet, despite all this growth, many decentralized derivatives platforms operate as if it's still 2018. With 

 (ETH) the largest blockchain hosting DeFi protocols, derivatives exchanges are encumbered with tardy settlement times and exorbitant 

. Additionally, onerous overcollateralization requirements are still the reality for many blockchain-based derivatives trading platforms.

One project within the space is notably different, though. Zeta Markets is a decentralized derivatives trading protocol on the 

 (SOL) blockchain that features lightning-fast sub-second transaction settlement times, minimal gas fees and the ability to trade via undercollateralized positions. The platform owes many of its benefits to Solana's stellar technical parameters. Others, however, are a function of the protocol's unique architecture.

 (ZEX) is a Solana-based crypto perpetuals exchange that offers users speedy order settlement times and meager fees while providing a noncustodial, fully on-chain trading environment. 

Thanks to the technical efficiencies of the Solana blockchain, the Zeta Markets platform features order processing times of less than one second and gas fees that are typically small fractions of a cent. As a public blockchain network, Solana also helps Zeta offer complete order transparency.

The protocol features a central limit order book (CLOB), a setup familiar to many DeFi traders using 

 (CEX) platforms and traditional markets. At the same time, it remains fully decentralized and is based on a blockchain ethos of community ownership.

Platform users place their perpetual futures trades from the same unified account, and account and order funding use the 

 (DEX) boasts one particularly vital feature — the ability to place undercollateralized trades. The platform's overall setup (particularly its margin system, discussed below) makes undercollateralized trading possible. This starkly contrasts with many other DeFi protocols, including perpetuals platforms that often require overcollateralization of accounts. For many DeFi users, this could be a critical factor, making Zeta Markets the best crypto perpetuals exchange for their trading needs.

Margin System for Undercollateralized Derivatives Trading

Zeta Markets' unique margin system allows it to offer undercollateralized trading opportunities. The system has three key elements: pricing 

 as the primary oracle to source up-to-date pricing data on crypto assets traded on the platform, with 

 as its backup oracle. Thanks to Solana's swift transaction-processing capabilities (supported by 400 millisecond block times), pricing data is incorporated into Zeta Markets in intervals of less than one second.

The collateral framework also works to support the margin system. While Zeta boasts undercollateralized opportunities, maintaining adequate collateral levels is important for ensuring the overall health and operations of its platform.

Finally, Zeta’s liquidation mechanism is also critical to protecting its system and making undercollateralized trading viable for the entire trader community. Network users willing to act as liquidators check the health of other accounts, liquidating those that fail below a certain maintenance 

 process, and any entity on the platform can opt to act as a liquidator. Liquidators earn rewards in the form of 30% of the maintenance margin for the liquidated account. Note, however, that acting as a liquidator is a high-risk activity with no guarantee of being profitable.

Unlike many other decentralized derivatives platforms, which typically use the 

 (AMM) trading model, Zeta is based on the CLOB system of order matching, which is usually found on CEXs. CLOB is based on directly matching buy and sell orders, rather than executing trades against an AMM liquidity pool. While AMMs shine for 

 trades, the CLOB model might be superior for crypto derivatives trading.

Compared to an AMM, the CLOB setup allows for better price discovery, often features more significant insights into market depth and is more efficient at supporting high-frequency trading. These factors are all critical for derivatives trading. Additionally, trigger orders — one of the main order types on Zeta Markets — are also better supported by a CLOB trading mechanism. 

Given all these advantages of a CLOB over an AMM in the area of derivatives trading, the project has made an intelligent choice to base its primary trading model on the former.

 have no expiration dates, funding rates are used to ensure that these contracts maintain value close to the underlying asset's spot market price at all times. A positive funding rate indicates that the price of the perpetual futures contract is currently higher than the underlying asset's price. In turn, a negative funding rate means that the futures contract is traded at a lower price than that of the underlying asset.

Based on current funding rates, Zeta users make funding payments to keep the price of the futures contracts adjusted to the market. Long positions make funding payments to short positions when the funding rate is positive, and conversely, 

 at times of negative funding rates. The prevalent funding rates are recalculated on the platform every 10 seconds.

Trading Tools and Features on Zeta Markets

 is the gateway to the platform's derivatives trading opportunities. Using it, you can open perpetuals contracts for some major high-cap cryptos, such as SOL, ETH, 

 (ARB), as well as several smaller-cap coins, e.g.,

Traders can also take advantage of the leverage in most of these perps. Typically, leverages on major coins like SOL, BTC or ETH are up to x10, while perpetuals based on smaller-cap coins have ratios of around x4–x5. As noted earlier, you’ll need to fund your account using USDC before opening these futures contracts based on the cryptocurrency of your choice.

Zeta users can earn rewards in the platform's native token, ZEX, based on their trading activity. The rewards are based on the user's Z-score, which is largely determined by the amount of 

 paid by the account. The Z-score for each user and the rewards paid out are calculated once per epoch, with each epoch typically lasting 28 days.

Zeta Markets’ native token, ZEX, was launched in late June 2024 on the Solana blockchain. The token's main functions include 

Following ZEX's token generation event (TGE), users can now stake the crypto for up to four years. Staking ZEX offers benefits, such as a boost to the user's Z-score, which is crucial for the amount of ZEX rewards earned, eligibility for 

 and the right to participate in on-platform governance processes.

Upon staking ZEX, users are assigned a gZEX score, which is determined by the amount and duration of staking.

The gZEX score mentioned above is critical for the user's influence on Zeta’s governance processes. Your voting power will depend heavily on this score. While the platform's governance processes are still maturing, it's expected that community members will actively participate in on-platform decision-making by discussing and voting on proposals for protocol changes, market listings, reward models and other parameters.

For 90 epochs starting from ZEX's TGE in late June 2024, the platform will distribute 300 million ZEX tokens in incentive payments. Users' Z-scores (see above) will be critical for determining their reward allocations. With each epoch covering 28 days, this incentive program is expected to run until around mid-2031.

The supply distribution chart above shows that 10% of ZEX tokens are allocated to community airdrops. The Round 1 airdrop has 8% of the total supply allocated to it. In it, early contributors to the platform will receive ZEX tokens following the TGE, with the majority of the allocation determined by the users' Z-scores.

The other 2% of the ZEX supply slated for airdrops will be distributed in Round 2, in which ZEX stakers will be eligible for token allocations based on their gZEX scores, which depend on the amount and duration of staking. The Round 2 airdrop is scheduled to start 28 days after the TGE, in late July 2024.
