Sui Name Service (SuiNS) enables blockchain users to register human-readable web3 names, ensuring secure, seamless transactions and a user-friendly on-chain identity.

Some people have no trouble remembering new cell phone numbers, and there are even a select few among us who wouldn't find it hard to memorize a 16-digit bank card number. However, very few people would choose to tackle the job of reliably recalling an alphanumeric blockchain address. Network addresses on 

 (ETH) are 42 characters long, while on the 

 (SUI) blockchain they span 66. These complex and length addresses are virtually impossible for most users to remember, and are among the least user-friendly features of 

 networks. Not only are long blockchain addresses distinctly user-unfriendly, but they also lead to many instances of wrongly executed transactions due to incorrectly input characters. 

Sui Name Service (NS), a solution on the Sui blockchain, has been specifically designed to tackle this problem. The service allows users to create human-readable and easy-to-remember web3 names linked to their underlying blockchain addresses. Using SuiNS, you can transact within web3 using your preferred username and, optionally, an avatar, rather than a long, complex blockchain address.

 (NS), or simply SuiNS, is a decentralized naming service that allows you to create and use a human-readable, user-friendly web3 handle to interact with the blockchain environment, instead of using a typical long and complicated network address. 

At the underlying level, your SuiNS name is linked to your blockchain address, but all the interaction and operations on the chain happen via your registered name.

SuiNS was first conceptualized and launched in 2022, inspired by the popular 

 (ENS). In many ways, SuiNS and ENS are similar, the obvious difference being that each one applies to its own respective blockchain environment. In May 2023, SuiNS was introduced on the Sui blockchain's newly launched mainnet. The service was developed and is supported by Mysten Labs, the development studio behind the Sui blockchain project. Since the beginning of the Sui blockchain's conceptualization, SuiNS has been among the core projects of the entire Sui ecosystem. As of late November 2024, SuiNS has managed to achieve the remarkable milestone of having registered nearly 330,000 names.

Using SuiNS, you can register your preferred username (as long as it's not been taken) for one year by paying a registration fee, currently charged in SUI coins. The name can be renewed at expiration for up to five years. All interactions with the blockchain environment through your wallet use your preferred username, rather than your blockchain address.

SuiNS names can be between 3 and 63 characters. Users can check the availability of their preferred handle and register it using the 

, where a lookup textbox is prominently displayed. Shorter names cost more than longer handles. As of the time of this writing (Nov 21, 2024), a three-character-long name costs 500 SUI ($1,785) and a four-character name will cost 100 SUI ($357), while names with five or more characters are priced at 20 SUI ($71.40).

A SuiNS name can only be registered for one year, but it can be renewed for up to four years (excluding the initial registration year). There's a 30-day grace period after the expiration of your SuiNS name, during which you may still renew it. If you don't renew during the grace period, your registered name will be up for grabs by anyone on the market. Optionally, you can buy an NFT avatar linked to your SuiNS name.

Thanks to SuiNS, you can enjoy short, comprehensible names for your own address, as well as the addresses of the parties with whom you transact (if they also sign up for the service). No more forgettable string combinations that are hard to read and virtually impossible to remember!

However, a SuiNS name isn't just a tool of convenience. It also represents your decentralized identity on-chain. The identity is fully owned by you, the user, rather than by a centralized entity.

SuiNS minimizes the likelihood of lost assets due to sending funds to the wrong address: short, easy-to-remember names are way less prone to incorrectly executed transactions than standard blockchain addresses.

Security is also among the benefits of SuiNS. The service runs on the Sui chain, which prides itself on developing and enforcing high-grade security standards. Among these are 

, a framework that maintains a list of malicious websites and on-chain assets, thus protecting the Sui ecosystem from 

 launched by these known nefarious entities.

The SuiNS service launched its native token, NS, on Nov 14, 2024. Initially, NS is envisioned to support 

 processes on the platform, and will also be used for purchasing and trading SuiNS names. Currently, names are traded using SUI, the blockchain's native cryptocurrency. It's likely that NS will replace SUI in this capacity in the near future. The project team has also hinted that there could be additional uses for the NS token beyond governance and payment for SuiNS names. More announcements on this issue are likely to follow.

During the initial phase of the token's existence, governance will be its most prominent function. Holders of NS will be able to vote on important issues concerning the protocol's rules and future direction. One NS equals one vote, with more NS tokens giving you a greater say in the overall decision-making process. You can also increase your voting power by locking your NS tokens for from one to 12 months. For every additional month locked, you obtain 10% voting power. The cryptocurrency sphere is using NFT royalties to change this. A closer look at the NFT market can give you a better understanding of how to generate passive income from your work.

NFT royalties are fees payable to content creators each time their works are sold. By establishing NFT royalties, creators can continue to profit on a perpetual basis, which may also encourage them to continue making content.

Historically, content creators and artists have had to continue producing work in order to support themselves. Their efforts produced a single payday, so that increased popularity of their established work didn’t yield any dividends for them.

An NFT royalty is a type of guaranteed payout to the original artist, stemming from secondary sales when an NFT holder sells the artist’s work to another buyer. To earn NFT royalties, the artist must mint the work. The percentage of each sale that’s paid in royalties is set up front by the artist. While there is no set requirement, the average royalty is close to 6%. Once an NFT is minted, the royalty is automatically collected and paid to the artist. NFT royalties are monitored on a blockchain. Minting involves adding specifications related to the royalties to the NFT’s smart contract.

When digital assets are created, their artists can access and adjust their smart contracts, the underlying technology powering NFTs. In doing so, the creator essentially programs the NFT to produce royalties specifically for them at each sale. The coding establishes an automated process to collect royalties from the sale and distribute them to the creator. No additional steps are required, either by the parties involved in the sale or by the content’s creator.

While average NFT royalties are around 6%, there’s considerable variation. In fact, NFT holders may expect to pay a royalty of between 3% to 10% for their sales. The royalty is based on the NFT’s sales price, which may be different for each sale. Therefore, the creator may earn a different amount with subsequent sales even though the royalty percentage remains the same. In the event of a remainder from the royalty calculation, the artist’s fee may be rounded off.

Why Are NFT Marketplaces Eliminating NFT Royalties?

The only surefire way for artists to receive NFT royalties on their work is to codify the royalty structure in their original smart contracts. Without this codification, exchanges can institute a tipping structure, or completely eliminate royalties and tipping altogether. OpenSea has recently introduced a 

The new OpenSea royalty enforcement tool went live on November 8, 2022. Its purpose is to make NFT royalties enforceable on its blockchain. When artists create digital assets with the royalty enforcement tool, these works cannot be sold on the NFT market through exchanges that don’t enforce the payment of NFT royalties. Currently, this tool is only available for new collections, but OpenSea has plans to release a similar tool for established collections as well.

Write an NFT Smart Contract with Royalties

While the process of writing an NFT smart contract with royalties may seem daunting, the steps can actually be completed in a few minutes. If you don’t already have a 

, it will need to be installed. Then, you establish your network, such as GoChain or another option. Ensure that your new network account has enough gas to run. In order to set up your NFT royalties, it does take a little extra work up front. However, the advantages of NFT royalties may make this effort well worth your while. What are the primary advantages of earning royalties off of the digital assets that you create?

These fraudulent works can potentially earn NFT royalties and prevent a work’s original creator from fully capitalizing on their efforts. However, the NFT market is catching on. Many established platforms have (or are building) solutions to flag imitations.

Another disadvantage associated with NFT royalties is price volatility, which means that artists cannot rely on a steady stream of passive income from royalties. Cryptocurrency prices can fluctuate dramatically within a short period of time, which has a direct impact on the value of digital assets at any given time. In turn, this fluctuation can affect demand.

Other Ways to Earn Passive Income With NFTs

In addition to NFT royalties, there are other ways for NFT creators to earn passive income. Whether they make music, podcasts or other creative works, their NFTs can provide an ongoing income stream to yield both short- and long-term benefits.

Rather than selling their work, creators can hold on to their digital assets and stake them. Staking NFTs requires that they be locked, which means that they temporarily become part of a blockchain network. The process of NFT staking is easy, and it produces cryptocurrency rewards for as long as the NFT is staked. However, while an NFT is locked, it cannot be traded, sold or moved.

NFTs have gaming applications, making it profitable to rent them to other players. These NFTs may be tools, weapons, skins, skills and more. Smart contacts enable you to dictate the terms of the rental agreement. Generally, NFT rentals have shorter terms, so this is a way to earn passive income for a short period of time before the renting process must be completed again.

You can also enjoy a steady stream of income by adding NFTs to liquidity pools. Liquidity pools allow platforms to make loans, and they use locked digital assets to fund those loans.
