The company behind the project, Zircuit Ltd., was founded in 2021 in Canada by Dr. Martin Derka, Jan Gorzny and Angel Xu. Zircuit's testnet was launched in November 2023, but made headlines in April 2024 when the project reported that its 

 (TVL) had soared past $2 billion. While testnet TVLs are more a gauge of future potential for a blockchain than an indicator of its existing worth, the news attracted the attention of industry observers toward the platform. Following its highly publicized testnet success, Zircuit launched the first phase of its mainnet in August 2024. This was followed by the launch of the platform's native token, ZRC, in November 2024.

As a typical rollup, Zircuit uses an off-chain sequencer node to batch and organize Layer 2 transactions for subsequent posting to the underlying Ethereum Layer 1. The batches have ZK validity proofs attached to them to signal to Layer 1 validators that they’re free from fraudulent transactions. Zircuit's architecture also includes prover nodes, whose job is to produce these validity proofs.

However, unlike other rollups using ZK proofs (also known as validity proofs), Zircuit doesn't generate validity proofs for every block of transactions. Instead, some blocks have pre-generated template proofs, while others go through the process of having a dedicated validity proof created for them. After a few blocks featuring validity proofs, there are several more that utilize template proofs. The image below illustrates this approach.

The key reason Zircuit has adopted this form of proof design is that the process of generating ZK proofs is computationally intensive. By using template proofs for some of the blocks in a sequence, Zircuit can reduce the overall computational overhead. However, the project’s team has stated that the template proof model is temporary, and will be phased out in the future. At that stage, the platform will move to generating ZK proofs for each block.

Zircuit features a highly modular design whereby provers — responsible for generating validity proofs on the platform — can easily be plugged into or removed from the network. This modular approach is distinct from the standard ZK rollup design, in which provers are more tightly and less flexibly integrated into the overall architecture.

As noted earlier, Zircuit uses a dedicated sequencer to organize and batch transactions into blocks. The platform also applies AI-driven monitoring at the sequencer level (the Sequencer Level Security, or SLS) to spot and exclude fraudulent transactions before they’re finalized on Layer 2.

When transactions are first posted to Zircuit, they enter the 

 — a temporary area from which the sequencer picks and organizes individual transactions into blocks. The mempool is being monitored at all times, using AI algorithms to identify suspicious transactions. If a transaction in the mempool raises a flag, it's quarantined and assessed for validity before the sequencer can include it in a block. The image below shows how this process works.

One of the distinct features of Zircuit is its hybrid architecture, which combines the properties of optimistic and ZK rollups. At the base level, Zircuit is built using Optimism's Bedrock development framework, a technology popular for optimistic rollup networks. However, the use of ZK proofs — or, to be more precise, a combination of validity proofs and template proofs — ensures that Zircuit enjoys a security level that standard optimistic rollups normally can't match.

The use of AI-based SLS provides robust security to Zircuit, complementing the already highly secure ZK proof system. Very few Layer 2 networks in the industry currently feature anything similar, making the platform a true pioneer of AI use for sequencer-level operations.

Like any rollup based on Optimism Bedrock, Zircuit enjoys EVM compatibility. This allows for smooth interoperability with the underlying Ethereum Layer 1. EVM compatibility also makes it easy for developers familiar with Ethereum’s environment to develop Zircuit-based DApps, or to port existing Ethereum applications to the platform. Developers can take advantage of technologies commonly used for Ethereum (e.g., the Solidity programming language and the Hardhat development framework) to build Zircuit applications and smart contracts.

Zircuit Bridge is a native bridging solution designed to easily transfer tokens between Ethereum and Zircuit. It boasts high security, low transaction fees and fast transfers, and allows users to move a variety of cryptocurrencies between Ethereum and Zircuit, including ETH, 

) and LRTs like Super Symbiotic LRT (weETHs). As of late November 2024, the total number of cryptos supported by the bridge is close to 30.

Zircuit has launched a reward program called Zircuit Points. Users can earn these Points by staking supported assets, and by participating in the Build to Earn initiative (more on this below). Accumulated points will be converted to ZRC tokens in the future. Points also create the opportunity to qualify for token airdrops.

The primary way for most users to earn Zircuit points is via 

. The Zircuit Staking program lets you stake LSTs, LRTs, popular stablecoins, some wrapped tokens and Ether (ETH) to earn points. Using LSTs and LRTs, you can earn yields (along with native Zircuit staking APRs and Points) from the respective staking and restaking platforms that issue these assets.

Zircuit Points earned via staking have different multipliers, depending upon the asset. For example, Ether has a multiplier of 0.5, while LSTs, LRTs and stablecoins have a multiplier of 1. Multipliers for different LST and LRT assets may be subject to change in the future.

Build to Earn is another way to qualify for Zircuit Points. The program allows developers to contribute to the Zircuit ecosystem and earn Points in a number of ways, including:

Launched in November 2024, ZRC is the platform's native cryptocurrency. It's an 

 asset deployed on both Zircuit and Ethereum Layer 1. ZRC is mainly used for reward distributions, and participation in token airdrops for ecosystem DApps. Currently, transaction fees on the network are paid in Ether. It's possible that, in the future, ZRC might be used for some transaction fee payments.

ZRC is also used for rewards under the Gas Rebate program. As users conduct transactions on the platform, they 

. Zircuit’s Gas Rebate program provides rebates to offset some of the incurred fees. The amount of ZRC earned as a rebate is proportional to the amount spent on gas in ETH; the project's documentation states that for each ETH spent on gas, the user earns 125% in ZRC. All kinds of gas fee payments qualify for the rebate, including ordinary asset transfers and transactions involving interaction with Zircuit DApps.

ETH Open Interest Grows While BTC’s Declines

ETH is outperforming BTC following the announcement of SEC Chair Gary Gensler’s departure, as evidenced in perpetual swap markets. BTC open interest has decreased from last week's highs, while ETH contracts have increased. Additionally, ETH trade volumes constitute a larger share of daily trading as compared to much of the past six months, despite an overall dip in trade volumes this week. The gradual decline in BTC open interest, without a surge in trading activity, indicates a strategic repositioning, rather than a wave of liquidations.

BTC Option Curve Inversion Deepens as Price Retreats

The pullback in the spot BTC price from the $100K target has led to a flat ATM volatility term structure, with short-tenor options dropping below 60%. 

This trend continues the correlation between term structure inversion and BTC spot price returns observed since the U.S. election on November 5, 2024

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is one of the world’s most popular sports leagues, with millions of fans in the U.S. and all over the world regularly tuning in to watch its games. In 2020, blockchain technology venture Dapper Labs, in partnership with the NBA, launched a basketball-themed 

The platform is now among the most popular NFT and collectible crypto projects. Thanks to the NBA’s massive popularity, NBA Top Shot has also contributed significantly to raising the awareness of the NFT and blockchain concepts among wider consumer audiences.

Canadian blockchain technology developer 

 is a well-known outfit in the crypto industry. The company was behind the hugely popular 

, the first high-profile play-to-earn NFT game. In 2019, Dapper Labs announced the launch of its own blockchain network,

 (FLOW), as well as a partnership with the NBA to introduce the NBA Top Shot NFT platform.

The platform went live in October 2020. NBA Top Shot allows its registered users to trade short video clips from National Basketball Association (NBA) and Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) games. Each video is an NFT of its own.

NBA Top Shot is built on Dapper Labs’ Flow blockchain, which features fast transaction speeds and low gas fees.

The project is an innovative attempt by Dapper Labs to capitalize on the general popularity of the sports trading card concept — in this case, within the digital, blockchain-based environment.

The NBA regularly supplies Dapper Labs with officially licensed video highlights of the league’s hugely popular games. Dapper Labs creates video clips from the supplied content and releases them on 

in the form of NFTs. Users can buy these NFTs in packs and sets. NBA Top Shot also maintains an NFT marketplace where users may trade their initially purchased NFTs in the secondary market.

To use the platform, you have to sign up for an account. In the past, it was a rather straightforward process. However, due to recent cases of account abuse, it’s now mandatory to provide identity verification during registration.

Once you successfully create an account, you can start buying newly released NFTs, participate in challenges and contests, and list and delist your NFTs on the marketplace. The NFT listing and delisting is free of charge for all users. When a sale is completed, sellers pay 5% of the transaction amount to the platform. The marketplace’s default pricing is in USD. You may view the equivalent prices in ETH and FLOW cryptos, although actual crypto payments aren’t yet supported on the marketplace.

The videos released by Dapper Labs are called “Moments.” Each Top Shot Moment™ is typically based on some in-play episode — e.g., a skillful defensive steal or an impressive attacking combination — and is dedicated to the player involved in the episode. The player’s name is the main identifier for the Moment. For example, currently, the most popular Moments are associated with the Los Angeles Lakers’ legendary forward, LeBron James.

Moments are classified into four different tiers — Common, Fandom, Rare and Legendary. Moments in the Common tier normally have a large number of copies, from a few thousand to a few dozens of thousands. On the other end of the rarity spectrum are Moments from the Legendary category, with only a few dozen unique items per edition.

The Common Moments are normally, though not necessarily, the least rare, and therefore tend to have the lowest prices. Out of all the NBA Top Shot NFTs, they make up 95.8%. Some Common Moment editions may have as many as 60,000 items. These are the most Common editions within the tier. They feature the lowest prices, and might be a good entry point for NFT collectors who prefer to test out the platform with minimal investment.

The typical edition size for the Common tier is 40,000 items. Some of the Moments in this tier may have fewer copies, making them rarer and, therefore, more valuable. The rarest Moments in this tier have about 3,000 to 4,000 items.

The Fandom tier Moments are often based on videos linked to some special occasions or games that stand out from the NBA season’s usual routine. These Moments are often available only to specific fan groups. Currently, 2.5% of all NBA Top Shot NFTs belong to the Fandom tier.

Some of the Fandom Moments have fewer items compared to the Common tier editions. There are quite a few Fandom editions with around 1,000 to 2,000 items. However, the Fandom tier doesn’t necessarily feature rarer editions as compared to the Common tier. An occasional Fandom Moment may have more than 60,000 copies, the current maximum for the Common tier.

An example of such a Fandom Moment is a vintage video from February 2006, in which Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade scores a goal against the Detroit Pistons. There are nearly 240,000 items/NFTs for this Moment.

The Rare Moments feature episodes from key games or videos involving legendary players of the league. As of the time of this writing (August 26, 2022), 1.6% of all the platform NFTs belong to the Rare tier. The Rare Moments typically have a few hundred copies per edition.

However, just as with the Fandom tier, there is no specific upper limit on the number of NFTs for a Rare Moment. Some Moments in this tier have up to around 2,000 copies.

The Legendary tier features the rarest and most valuable Moments. Many Moments in this category have 99 copies per edition, though some Moments feature as few as 20–30 items. Meanwhile, the least Rare editions within the tier may have up to 125 items. Only 0.09% of all the NFTs on the platform belong to the Legendary tier.

Moments are the platform’s most basic product unit. They’re released in packs, rather than individually. Each pack contains several Moments. Depending on the 

, these Moments may come from different tiers.

There are currently three standard types of NBA Top Shot packs:

, which may have Moments from Common, Rare and Legendary tiers in variable proportions.

There are three common ways for collectors to get their hands on NBA Top Shot Moments: Purchasing packs, completing Flash Challenges and using the NBA Top Shot marketplace.

1. Pack Purchases (Starter Pack and Pack Drops)

Buying packs is one way to become a part of the NBA Top Shot collector community. Normally, Dapper Labs makes base packs, such as the Starter Pack and the WNBA Starter Pack, available for purchase at any time. Additional non-base packs and sets of packs may also be offered via the platform’s 

Challenges are also a popular way to earn Moments. A common type of challenge frequently run by NBA Top Shot is the Flash Challenge, which is based on game or player stats. For example, challenge participants might be asked to submit a Moment with the player who’s scored the most points in the previous NBA round. Winners of Flash Challenges are given select Moments as prizes.

3. NBA Top Shot Marketplace (Peer-to-Peer Trading)

The third way to become a proud owner of NBA Top Shot Moments is via the platform’s marketplace. This option gives you the widest choice, thanks to the great variety of the previously released Moments listed for sale by their owners. While the marketplace might not have all the latest releases, it opens up opportunities to pick and choose Moments using a variety of useful filters. You can search for Moments for a specific player, team, NBA season, tier and more.

New NBA Top Shot Moments released by Dapper Labs may be bought using cryptocurrency as well as fiat money. Although the platform runs on the Flow blockchain, Dapper Labs has designed it to be as user-friendly as possible for people with limited knowledge of crypto.

You may buy Moment packs and sets using popular debit and credit cards Visa and MasterCard, so there’s no need to open a crypto wallet and use crypto coins to make these purchases. This helps the platform target wider consumer segments, specifically fans and collectors who are still uncomfortable with using crypto payments.

You may also use various crypto coins for pack purchases. Currently, Dapper Labs 

While crypto payments are supported for new packs and sets, the platform’s NFT marketplace only accepts credit and debit card payments. On the marketplace, you may view prices in ETH and FLOW, but you won’t be able to make payments in these or any other cryptos yet.

The basic starter packs released by Dapper Labs are currently offered for $9 per pack. The pricing for other packs varies wildly, depending on the pack’s Moments, players featured, events or games linked to, edition rarity and a myriad of other factors. For instance, at the time of this writing, the only non-starter pack on offer is a 5-Moment WNBA Premium pack dedicated to the female league’s superstar Sylvia Fowles. The pack is priced at $89.
