Coinbase has launched the mainnet for Base, its Ethereum Layer-2 network, with an aim to encourage the development of decentralized apps (dapps). The launch, part of a month-long event called Onchain Summer, has already attracted over $142 million in total value locked in the ecosystem. Unlike other layer-2 networks, Coinbase will not introduce any native tokens to Base, focusing instead on supporting network-native developers. Over 100 dapps will be available with Base's launch. The decision not to issue a token may also help Coinbase avoid additional regulatory scrutiny, as the company is currently facing legal pressure from the Securities and Exchange Commission.
