Why the world is suddenly crazy about stablecoins

Stablecoins are once again making headlines — but what’s driving this renewed momentum? Several key developments have pushed stablecoins into the mainstream conversation, including Donald Trump’s recent proposal for a 

. According to Paz Gonzalez, these announcements signal a broader shift tied to the weakening influence of the US dollar. In times like these, stablecoins could gain mass adoption, giving governments a way to reassert monetary control through a digital proxy.

Jip Molenaar agrees with Gonzalez, adding that Bitcoin is unlikely to become the world’s primary currency, despite what many once believed. Instead, Molenaar sees Bitcoin’s future role as that of a store of value — 

 — while stablecoins will take on the role of everyday money, used for payments, bill settlements and daily transactions. 

, Molenaar argues, has helped bring digital assets into the political mainstream, making the concept of crypto usage more palatable to the general public than ever before.

Molenaar also shares his personal experience transitioning from euros to USDT, a process he describes as challenging and significant. Living in Europe, switching to a US dollar–pegged stablecoin wasn’t easy — and that’s precisely why he believes most users won’t readily jump to new alternatives. For many, USDT and 

Paz sees Fidelity’s entry into stablecoins as a bullish signal for the industry. As a well-established and trusted financial institution, Fidelity’s involvement could sway skeptics who have traditionally avoided crypto. Its participation brings credibility — and potentially, a new wave of adoption.

He also emphasizes that the legitimacy of any currency, fiat or crypto, depends upon being backed by a clear source of value. Historically, 

. For stablecoins to earn that trust, the same principle applies — they must be transparently backed. Today, more investors recognize that leading stablecoins are supported by reserves, and are subject to increasing regulatory oversight.

However, despite this progress, Molenaar remains cautious. He warns that another event like the 

 is still possible if stablecoins aren’t properly backed and transparently managed. Without clear support mechanisms, he believes trust will erode — and widespread adoption will stall.

USDT currently holds the largest market share among all stablecoins and is the most actively traded. Molenaar attributes this dominance to the convenience and wide acceptance of USDT across trading platforms. He points out that the infrastructure for USDT is already deeply entrenched in the crypto ecosystem, making it far easier to execute trades and move funds. Because of this strong foundation, he believes it will be extremely difficult for any competing stablecoin to unseat USDT.

Gonzalez agrees: while she personally holds some USDC, she says that when people ask her to send a stablecoin, it’s almost always USDT. Even though USDC has made efforts to challenge USDT’s dominance, Gonzalez doesn’t see that happening anytime soon — if ever. She also underscores the fact that stablecoins like USDT aren't meant to be investments in the way Bitcoin or altcoins are. Instead, they serve more practical purposes, facilitating transactions and providing stable on-chain alternatives to fiat.

Molenaar adds that older generations, particularly baby boomers, tend to wait until new markets are validated by trusted institutions before getting involved. With firms like Fidelity now backing crypto through 

 (ETFs) and exploring stablecoin adoption, that validation is underway. Because Fidelity has integrated USDT into its ecosystem, Molenaar believes that conservative investors will naturally gravitate toward it over less familiar alternatives.

Gonzalez also shares her approach to risk management. Rather than going all-in on one asset, she diversifies and experiments cautiously — allocating small amounts to new opportunities. 

, for example, is one method she uses to generate passive income while testing out new protocols or tokens.

When it comes to adoption, Gonzalez sees real-world use cases driving interest in stablecoins. She mentions the new Wyoming stablecoin, which offers local taxpayers a slight reduction on their annual tax bills. While its benefits may currently apply to a small group, she believes this kind of practical utility is crucial. To achieve broader adoption, stablecoins — including smaller, emerging ones — need meaningful use cases tied to local economies. 

Still, for global accessibility and widespread usage, she maintains that a well-established option such as USDT is essential.

Stablecoins and trading — what really matters to traders

Molenaar is all-in on USDT, choosing to avoid the risks that come with lesser-known stablecoins. For him, USDT offers the highest liquidity and the lowest risk, due to its widespread adoption. While he's open to switching if a new, dominant stablecoin emerges, he’s not willing to gamble on smaller or less established options at this time.

Gonzalez adds an important perspective: stablecoins don’t just enable transactions — they also reflect the health and movement of the broader crypto market. Since stablecoins support liquidity within cryptocurrency networks, their flows can signal shifts in underlying asset trends. Traders are beginning to pay more attention to this relationship.

While most stablecoins are backed by USD, some stablecoin creators are now exploring alternative pegs, such as gold. But for Gonzalez, the backing isn't the main concern: usability is. She prioritizes the ease with which a stablecoin can be used for trading. In her view, investors today care more about functionality and integration with platforms than the specific assets backing the coin. 

Molenaar agrees, adding that ease of use often comes down to habit — knowing the ins and outs of how to trade with a particular coin saves time and effort. He also points out that staking stablecoins typically yields higher returns than do traditional bank savings accounts. That’s one reason he keeps minimal funds in banks — in addition to his distrust of the traditional banking system. He prefers to let his funds work for him through stablecoin staking.

Gonzalez also sticks with USDT because of its simplicity and reliability. She takes a cautious, thoughtful approach to her finances, due to her awareness of how hard she works to earn her money. When trading with USDT, she invests time in researching opportunities. Therefore, she believes that having a deep understanding of stablecoins is crucial in order to make smart financial decisions.

Both Molenaar and Gonzalez highlight the importance of using a trusted platform when holding and trading stablecoins. Molenaar uses Bybit because he feels confident his funds are secure there, and Gonzalez echoes this sentiment — rather than spreading her assets across multiple exchanges, she sticks with Bybit for its reliability and trustworthiness.

January 2024 has a prominent position in the history of cryptocurrency. Despite the uncertainty in the impact of the recently approved Bitcoin spot ETFs, one thing is for sure: the approval of BTC spot ETFs in the U.S. will bring more institutional influence to crypto valuation, adding to the complexity of crypto trading.

In this analysis, we’ll dive deep into the aftermath of Bitcoin spot ETF approvals, their impact on Bitcon’s price, updates on Bitcoin fundamentals and a preview of the upcoming Bitcoin halving. 

Crypto in Focus — What’s Next for Bitcoin?

 refers to the 11 Bitcoin spot ETFs approved to be listed in the U.S. by the SEC (if without clear indication).

Bitcoin spot ETFs were approved by the SEC on Jan 10, 2024, with the first 11 issuers open to trading on the following date. As a result, the market has been closely monitoring the performance of these 11 Bitcoin spot ETFs, particularly on the capital flow, which measures how much Bitcoin is taken out of the circulating supply. The intended supply shock has been envisioned as the catalyst for the Bitcoin price rally. Yet, the supply shock theory assumes that there would be huge capital inflows into the Bitcoin spot ETFs.

The debut of 11 Bitcoin spot ETFs saw an initial $1.5 billion injected by traders in the first half-month, f

alling short of Bloomberg’s expected $4 billion inflow on day one. In addition, the market projected $50 billion into those Bitcoin spot ETFs by 2024. As a comparison, the futures Bitcoin ETFs-BICO attracted $1 billion on the first trading day. 

However, there’s been a promising turnaround since Jan 26, 2024. Ever since capital outflows from 

 decelerated, all 11 Bitcoin spot ETFs have been seeing net positive inflows. 

The industry still hopes to achieve the $50 billion capital inflow target by 2024 as GBTC’s impact fades. It’s considered that the remarkable outflow of GBTC is a one-off, due to the profit realization from GBTC’s NAV discounts before the conversion to an ETF. 

As a highlight, the debut week’s performances are historically critical. It’s not uncommon for the market to try and estimate the whole year of capital inflows from the first few days of capital flow. Based on the historical trend from the Canadian Bitcoin spot ETF, which eked out over $400 million in capital inflows in the first two days of trading and ended the debut year with around $700 million in capital inflows. Extrapolated from this estimate, the new Bitcoin spot ETFs would only manage to earn $2 billion by the end of 2024. Nonetheless, the U.S. market is quite different from the Canadian financial market.

All in all, despite a slower beginning, some analysts suggest that institutions known for their cautious approach may take time to embrace this new investment instrument. Hedge funds, for instance, have restrictions in their offering documents that limit them to investing in only mature or time-tested instruments. This demand for a proven product aligns with a thoughtful investment strategy, indicating a potential gradual increase in capital inflows into spot BTC ETFs as confidence builds.

The trading volume of Bitcoin spot ETFs stands out significantly in comparison to the calculated capital inflows, showcasing an interesting trend. This anomaly could be attributed to selling pressure from Grayscale’s Bitcoin spot ETF, whereby investors are capitalizing on discounted profits and dealing with GBTC’s relatively high fees as compared to peers. Additionally, the uptick in trading volume might be a result of investors transitioning their holdings from Bitcoin futures ETFs to spot ETFs, reflecting a dynamic shift in the market.

 is an important event that occurs every 210,00 blocks, or approximately every four years. It’s a programmed mechanism that cuts in half the reward for Bitcoin 

, theoretically to control the issuance of new bitcoins and manage inflation.

Bitcoin’s network operates on a fixed supply schedule, with a total cap of 21 million bitcoins.. The previous halving took place in May 2020, reducing the reward for each mined block of BTC transactions from 12.5 bitcoins to 6.25 bitcoins per block, and the upcoming halving will reduce it to 3.125 BTC.

Halving events have had significant implications for Bitcoin’s ecosystem, reducing the rate at which new Bitcoins are created and effectively slowing the supply of new coins entering the market. Coupled with increasing demand for Bitcoin, this reduction in supply has historically led to upward pressure on BTC’s price. As visible in the graphic above, an upward price trend in the first year ensues a new halving cycle.

Long-term holders of Bitcoin have surged to 57%, while liquid supply and the number of short-term holders have continued to drop. The approval of the Bitcoin spot ETF will speed up this trend, as it requires the storage of spot Bitcoin by ETF issuers/participants, siphoning liquidity away from the spot BTC market. While assets under management (AUM) and trading volume may fail to live up to expectations, Bitcoin spot ETFs might continue to see flows from previous Bitcoin futures ETFs and Bitcoin-related derivatives.

, as we’ve seen projects announcing their intentions to inscribe their new collections on the network. 

In summary, we have a fundamentally strong thesis around Bitcoin. 

In sum, the upcoming halving, the strong Bitcoin HODLing and the growing developer community for Bitcoin will continue to support its bullish price action. In particular, the U.S. will likely kick off its loosening economic cycle soon, benefiting high-beta risky assets. 

In addition, we believe that the surprisingly low capital inflows of Bitcoin spot ETFs are due to the intense selling pressures from GBTC and the “sell the news” narrative. Once Bitcoin adjusts to a price that sounds attractive, institutions will likely pour in their capital. Web 2.0 institutions are experts in trading, and wouldn’t inject big money on day one when the market was overbought, especially considering that

Undoubtedly, the most significant influence on the pricing of risky assets was the timing of the expected Fed rate cuts. As a highlight, the Fed meeting on January 31 dampened the expectation of an earlier rate cut.

Let’s look at what’s turned out differently in the market’s bet on the interest rate path. Last month, over 70% of market participants thought there would be a 25 basis point cut in March’s Fed decision. As of the time of writing (Feb 7, 2024), the probability drops to 38%. The market has reacted to the robust U.S. economic data and employment reports, and tuned down their previous aggressive estimates. Let's dive into the economic data.

The Producer Price Index (PPI) and Consumer Price Index (CPI) that formed in early 2022 have halted. In particular, the CPI print shows signs of stabilizing above the 3% range. This is undesirable for most Fed officials, who tend to tame the interest rate down to the 2% range before considering a rate cut. 

The economy has continued to grow, with the model now indicating 2.4% growth in nominal GDP in the fourth quarter of 2023. Meanwhile, retail sales have been firmly above the trend since the beginning of Covid-19. A desirable “soft landing” is seemingly materializing, further supporting the Fed’s hawkish policy tilt.

We also see resilience in the employment market, as the above graph shows no sign of rebounds in initial jobless claims. Pricing stability and full employment are the Fed’s two main pillars. The absence of a hiking unemployment rate likely won't lead to a significant shift in the restrictive monetary policy.

In summary, the economy has been in good shape, a fact which doesn’t warrant an aggressive rate cut. In addition, Big Tech's corporate earnings have been solid. The highlight is that chip companies are coping well — despite falling orders for smartphones and gaming — thanks to strong demand for AI chips and data centers.
