Distributed Technologies Research (DTR) has introduced DRAM, a stablecoin backed by the United Arab Emirates dirham. This initiative is spearheaded by Akshay Naheta, a former MIT alumnus and SoftBank executive, to offer countries with high inflation a connection to the UAE's stable fiat currency. The dirham-backed stablecoin was developed by the Abu Dhabi-based DTR, which was previously co-founded by Naheta in Switzerland in 2019. DRAM is an Ethereum ERC-20 token managed by Hong Kong's Dram Trust. Regulations state that before DRAM tokens are minted, dirham fiat reserves must be in place. Currently, DTR cannot offer DRAM in the UAE or Hong Kong, but discussions are ongoing for listings on exchanges outside these regions. Naheta anticipates demand for DRAM from companies in areas facing high inflation and currency challenges, driven by the UAE's robust economy. The UAE is becoming a central hub for the crypto and Web3 space, with major exchanges, including Binance, operating in the area.
