In January 2024, the project launched Morpho Blue, later rebranded to Morpho, a solution to help users create highly flexible lending markets with custom parameters and options. At the same time, Morpho Optimizers remains an integral part of the platform's core offering, albeit in a less prioritized state than Morpho.

The Morpho protocol consists of three main products — Morpho, Morpho Vaults (based on the underlying protocol) and the legacy Morpho Optimizers. Morpho allows users to create individual lending markets by specifying their preferred options for the following key attributes:

Morpho's high level of customizability is a significant departure from the typical model used on decentralized lending and borrowing platforms. On most other protocols, there are fixed parameters governing the lending and borrowing process; e.g., only certain collateral assets, lending assets or LLTV rates are allowed. In contrast, Morpho lets you customize all of these options, giving lending market creators an unmatched degree of freedom. The protocol offers the following key benefits to users, developers and market operators:

While Morpho is currently the platform's flagship product, the legacy Morpho Optimizers continues as a key offering in the platform's product line. Morpho Optimizers are add-on layers to the Aave and Compound lending pools. They can be used to facilitate a peer-to-peer match between lenders and borrowers. Since typical lending pools — including on platforms like Aave and Compound — are often heavily skewed with more lenders than borrowers, both parties end up paying excessive fees. Borrowers have to confront high costs due to the need to service the many lenders in the pool. In turn, lenders fight for the meager scraps left over from insufficient numbers of borrowers.

By using a P2P matching mechanism, Morpho Optimizers effectively takes the lender and borrower away from pool-based interaction and establishes a direct relationship between them. This allows users to borrow assets at cheaper rates, while also delivering better APYs for lenders. If either party withdraws from the direct lending relationship, both parties have the option to use the standard lending pools on Aave and Compound as a fallback.

The platform's third core product, Morpho Vaults (covered in more detail below) utilizes the underlying protocol and provides a way to lend through carefully curated market options at different risk profiles. This can suit lenders who are less proficient in using fully customized markets, but still prefer to take advantage of the lending opportunities offered by Morpho.

In order to create a custom lending market on Morpho, you need to have some technical proficiency and, preferably, knowledge of Solidity, the programming language that the protocol uses for its smart contracts. As noted earlier, developers can create a custom market by supplying five base parameters — a collateral asset, an asset offered for lending, an oracle, a preferred IRM and an LLTV. The first four of these normally require an Ethereum smart contract address to be specified. For the collateral and lending assets, these are the addresses for the tokens' contracts. The selected oracle is also usually established via a pointer to its smart contract address, although oracle-less hard-coded prices for the collateral and lent assets are acceptable. Morpho also maintains Ethereum addresses for each IRM whitelisted by the protocol's governance; developers can use these when choosing a preferred IRM.

The last value, LLTV, is a hard-coded figure that defines the threshold beyond which a loan becomes unhealthy due to its poor 

. Liquidators on Morpho are protocol actors who are incentivized to cover bad debts in return for collateral, similar to the method used on many other lending platforms. They’re allowed to liquidate up to 100% of the debt. In return, liquidators receive the debt's collateral, as well as an additional incentive for their work.

Since Morpho is an oracle-agnostic protocol without a built-in oracle, each market can have its own oracle that sources prices for the collateral and lending assets from external sources. Developers are completely free in that regard, and can even hard-code asset prices for the market if they don't wish to use a price oracle at all. Naturally, an oracle is preferred for maintaining the most up-to-date and dynamic pricing information.

The IRM used is the only base parameter with which developers are somewhat restricted in their choice, as only whitelisted IRMs are allowed for a market. As of mid-November 2024, there’s just one whitelisted IRM that market creators can specify — the 

. This model dynamically adjusts interest rates to maintain the proportion of borrowed funds to supplied funds at close to 90%.

Morpho Vaults are a tokenized vault product that offers curated lending opportunities with varying pre-programmed risk parameters. Each vault is associated with a single loan asset, and can allocate deposits across multiple Morpho markets, thereby leveraging the overall liquidity available on the Morpho protocol. Morpho Vaults suit lenders who prefer predictable risk management over the uncertainty of completely custom markets. Each lender can earn APY rates commensurate with their chosen 

There is no limit on the number of vaults you can open on Morpho. Thus, you might even allocate funds to different vaults with significantly different risk levels to diversify your exposure.

Morpho Vaults' curated nature eliminates the need for users to spend time researching and evaluating individual markets' risk levels and return opportunities, as risk exposure is actively managed by the vault.

Since the vaults are connected to the underlying protocol, and source liquidity from it, they’re dynamically rebalanced, which helps optimize yields. Thanks to their permissionless and immutable nature, the vaults are also completely transparent. Moreover, they’re noncustodial, granting users full control over their deposited assets, which can be withdrawn at any time.

A lender deposits an asset into a Morpho Vault and receives shares of the vault as confirmation of their investment. The vaults themselves are tokenized products utilizing Ethereum's 

 standard, designed to represent tokenized vaults for yield-bearing assets. Each vault may be owned by a 

 (DAO), an individual DeFi expert or some algorithm maintained by a DeFi platform. A vault can be owned by only one entity. The owner may specify additional roles/entities for managing the vault. These roles can include one curator, one guardian and multiple allocators.

The curator is a party who sets certain limits, rules and boundaries for the vault, such as specifying asset supply limitations and enabling/disabling specific markets. Curators are instrumental in maintaining appropriate risk levels for their vaults. Assets that lenders lock in a vault are supplied to the protocol's underlying markets, based on curators' whitelists. There can only be one curator for each vault.

The role of guardian is a key vault position. A guardian protects the integrity and security of the vault. Guardians can revoke any action by the vault owner (or other entities) if they consider it to be against the interests of vault lenders. Each vault can only have one guardian, typically a DAO consisting of vault depositors.

Allocators are protocol actors whose job is to rebalance the liquidity utilized by Morpho Vaults to optimize interest rates and accessible liquidity. An allocator’s job is to rebalance and optimize the total liquidity, either manually or using bots, to best meet the needs of Morpho borrowers.

Morpho Vaults' operations aren't regulated by the protocol's governance mechanism. Each vault owner is responsible for their vault's governance model. Specific roles, such as the curator and the guardian, are designed to help in establishing transparent and secure governance procedures for a vault.

What Is the Morpho Crypto Token (MORPHO)?

The platform's native cryptocurrency, MORPHO, is envisioned as a 

. Holders of MORPHO have the right to participate in decision-making on the platform's future direction, general rules, deployment of smart contracts and allocation of funds from the treasury. Although Morpho promotes lending and borrowing markets that operate with minimal interference from the protocol's governance community, there are some general guidelines and rules through which the community needs to establish certain standards, minimum requirements or whitelists. MORPHO token holders are instrumental in this process.

The original MORHPO token was launched on Ethereum in June 2022 with a supply cap of 1 billion. However, there were limitations to the original token contract that negatively affected its functionality. Specifically, the token wasn't designed to facilitate efficient on-chain voting. As a result of these limitations, the project decided to relaunch the token, now on an upgraded contract. The new reincarnation of MORPHO will offer better functional capabilities, including more efficient on-chain governance processes. 

As of the time of writing on Nov 17, 2024, the project team has yet to deploy the new token. The new MORPHO will also be a supply-capped crypto, with a maximum and total supply of 1 billion. The token's supply distribution shares are shown in the chart below.

At some point, you may have heard the phrase, “buy the dip.” After crypto burst onto the popular scene, investment catapulted the price of many crypto coins higher, creating strong uptrends. When this happens, traders may develop FOMO and decide to buy even at high prices. However, 

 allows traders to use any corrective dip in price as an opportunity to buy Bitcoin at a cheaper level.

There are risks involved with buying dips in price, as a small dip may simply be the beginning of a large market crash. Market crashes are nothing new to Bitcoin, which has a history of correcting more than 75% — rendering “buy the dip” as a debatable strategy. Is buying the dip the best strategy for you? “Buying the dip” is another way to say that you’re purchasing a financial asset after it’s fallen in value. While the asset is falling, it’s said to be in a “dip” where prices are lower than the previous high. When the market has been in a longer-term sustained uptrend, this dip in price presents an opportunity to buy more shares or coins at a discount. This way, if the market returns to new highs, you’ll have more shares or coins, which enhances your future gains.


Buying the dip is a universal trading strategy for most financial assets in the stock market or crypto market. But it’s an especially popular strategy for trading Bitcoin because crypto trends tend to be unusually long and strong. As a result, it’s challenging for traders to catch the opportunities, which results in traders buying at higher prices. Therefore, waiting for a corrective dip to unfold provides traders an opportunity to enter into the position at a cheaper price and accumulate more coins than if they bought them at a higher cost.

Dip buying can appear in any financial market — stocks, commodities, futures, forex and crypto. However, buying the dip in crypto can be different from employing the strategy within other financial markets.

Typically, the trends in the crypto market are stronger and the volatility is substantial. Therefore, when a corrective dip unfolds, the correction in crypto can be more significant than in other financial markets.


Take Bitcoin in 2021, for example. Bitcoin started the year by doubling in value. As the price continued to ascend, corrective dips were relatively shallow, between 18% to 31%. However, when Bitcoin’s price reached $64k, a larger crash began to unfold in the summer of 2021 which resulted in a 55% correction.

This is the biggest challenge in buying the dip with crypto. You may buy on a 20% corrective dip, only to find the crypto market eventually crashing over 50%. A long-term investor (HODLer) believes that buying the dip simply allows them to garner more coins while crypto is still early in its adoption stage. Their rationale is that if the price increases dramatically, their stash of coins could produce life-changing wealth.

There are many reasons why prices dip for Bitcoin that range from political instability, regulatory measures, and community influence. For example, the changes in the global economy are driving investment away from Bitcoin. The global pandemic of 2020 slowed commerce down, grinding businesses and economic activity to a halt. Due to citizens having doubts about their future employment, they pulled back investments in anticipation of lower pricing.

In addition, the news cycle may create short-term dips. In 2021, 

, making it illegal for them to do business there. As a result, a majority of Bitcoin nodes shut down or had to move their operations somewhere else, making the Bitcoin network less secure as there were fewer nodes to verify transactions.

Sometimes, an asset is simply overbought and needs to consolidate its previous gains. There are technical indicators traders can apply to price charts to determine if a

Many people still don’t believe investing in cryptocurrencies is wise, since there aren’t time-tested cash flows or proven ways to value crypto networks. This results in FUD, causing investors to question their investments — and to consider selling their Bitcoin.

Catch a Falling Knife vs. Buy the Dip: Differences

The evil cousin to “Buy the Dip” is “Catch a Falling Knife.” The falling knife analogy is used by traders to suggest that the market is crashing, and may not rebound anytime soon. Suppose that a knife is dropped from an all-time high above. If you were to stick your hand out and try to catch it, you might get cut up pretty badly. There’s a chance you could catch the knife without hurting your hand, but are you willing to take the risk? 

This is how it is when markets are crashing. Traders might see lower prices and decide to buy in anticipation of a rebound. However, that rebound might not come for several months — or even years. Traders involved in the 2018 crash are familiar with this phenomenon, as the bear markets lasted for 11 months and collapsed 85%.

The big difference between catching a falling knife and buying the dip is that dips tend to be relatively small and contained within the context of the larger uptrend. Retracements of 20–40% are normal in crypto.

On the other hand, a falling knife is more like a crash or a collapse, where the vast majority of the price is retraced swiftly and deeply.

Buying the dip is really about market timing, with two common strategies. The first involves adding support trend lines to the charts, and the second is using an oscillator, such as RSI, to help identify turning points.

Let’s start with trend lines. When the market is in a strong uptrend, look for common swing lows, and connect them with a trend line. Extend this trend line to the right, and it should be below the current market price.

Then, as a corrective dip unfolds, look to buy when the price reaches the support trend line, while targeting new highs. This process can be repeated — again and again — as the market frequently dips, even within a strong uptrend.

The trend line won’t hold up forever. When it breaks, that’s a clue that a larger correction, and even a possible crash, may be unfolding.


Another common strategy for buying the dip involves waiting for oversold oscillators on the intraday chart. When Bitcoin is in a strong uptrend on the daily chart, scroll down to a 4-hour chart and add an oscillator, like the RSI.

The RSI indicator is versatile to help traders identify when an asset has become oversold. Its signals can alert you that the dip may be coming to an end, offering an opportunity to buy.

In the Bitcoin chart above, there are several instances when the RSI is signaling oversold conditions, meaning a rally is about to begin. A trader could use those signals to buy while targeting new highs.

The challenge with using a tool like RSI is that if Bitcoin were to crash, the oversold conditions would be a buy signal — even though the market is collapsing. Therefore, RSI works best when conditions are believed to be sustaining the uptrend.

“Buying the dip” itself is just a catchphrase. Traders need to turn the phrase into a strategy that’s similar to what we’ve outlined above. Therefore, to successfully buy the dip, you need to use 

 to time the market. There are many other oscillators and indicators to use for this purpose.

Aside from the strategies discussed above, Bitcoin must be in a strong uptrend. The strength of the uptrend is what allows the price to recover from the brief dip. If the uptrend is lacking strength, then the strategy becomes riskier as the uptrend struggles to bail you out.

Worse yet, if Bitcoin is in a downtrend, then buying the dip won’t work because you’ll get caught in bull traps, leading to losing trades.

 means buying a predetermined amount of an asset at predefined timing intervals. An example would be buying $500 of Bitcoin on the first Friday of each month.

The main difference between dollar-cost averaging (DCA) and buying the dip is that DCA is predefined, irrespective of the price of Bitcoin. On the other hand, buying the dip is fully dependent on the price of Bitcoin, and requires the trader to correctly time their entries into new bull rallies.

Therefore, when deciding whether to DCA or buy the dip, consider your skill levels in technical analysis and timing bullish reversals. DCA doesn’t require any special skills — just a calendar to plan your buys. Buying the dip, however, does require the trader to understand technical analysis and be able to implement it with high accuracy.

Buying the dip is a popular catchphrase used by investors who intend to hold on to dear life with their assets, and typically in a long run. By itself, buying the dip isn’t a strategy for making money, which is why traders will want to create their own rules for buying and selling on minor dips in pricing.

In other words, buying the dip can be a successful tactic if the trader considers current market conditions. Otherwise, they might get caught at the beginning of a market crash, which will create losses in their trading account. As with any other trading strategy, buying the dip is best attempted with both market awareness and experience in technical analysis in your toolbox.
