The primary methods through which you can earn interest on crypto are staking and lending. Staking involves locking your funds on a blockchain to help validate transactions, in return for which you earn crypto rewards from the platform. Additionally, some centralized platforms — such as CEXs and

Staking is often viewed as a safer option than lending. After all, staking is a fundamental process on a blockchain network, and is thus well-protected by the overall blockchain security model. If staking fails on a blockchain, the entire blockchain fails, along with all of its 

 (DApps). Due to this critical importance of staking, its safety is secured against all but the most severe hacks.

DeFi lending also takes place on DApps residing on top of the underlying blockchain, which introduces an additional layer of vulnerability. Furthermore, DeFi lending presents some very specific security risks, such as 

Therefore, staking generally poses comparatively fewer security threats to your funds as compared to lending. 

The risk-vs.-return between staking and lending, however, may not be as clear-cut. In general, established lending protocols such as 

 offer lower interest rates for large-cap, popular cryptocurrencies, as compared to standard staking interest rates. However, some smaller lending platforms might offer extremely high-interest rates, usually for highly volatile, small-cap coins.

As with everything in the world of finance, the higher the rate offered, the more risk the investment carries. The downside risks of investing in very new, “dark horse” cryptos available on some lending platforms might be extremely high. Furthermore, when you use DeFi lending protocols, you’ll also face the potential for impermanent loss, due to the volatility of crypto assets. Nevertheless, protocols usually assist with mitigating the losses by distributing a portion of the trading fees to liquidity providers.

Another important factor in the staking vs. lending comparison is collateralization. On lending and borrowing platforms, borrowers are first required to lend funds to the protocol as collateral for their borrowed amounts. Staking, on the other hand, involves no collateral.

Staking on Exchanges vs. Staking on Blockchains

If you decide to stake your crypto funds, your two main options will be via CEXs, and/or participation on a blockchain platform, which can be done directly by running a validator node or by joining a staking pool.

Running a blockchain validator node lets you earn staking rewards directly. However, the technical setup and minimum investment requirements are often significant. For example, to run a validator node 

 you’ll need to download the entire blockchain, be online at all times to avoid “slashing” penalties and run all the requisite software.

Financial requirements for validator nodes are also far from trivial. 

For instance, Ethereum validators must stake at least 32 ETH (around $89,787 as of Feb 4, 2025).

As an alternative to direct staking, you may join a staking pool such as 

 for ETH staking. These staking pool solutions allow users to stake with significantly lower technical and financial commitments. Many ETH staking pools also offer stakers a 

 that represents the staked ETH and its associated rewards, which can be used for various DeFi purposes. However, unlike direct blockchain staking, participating in a staking pool makes you dependent on that pool’s operator.

Instead of staking on a blockchain, whether individually or via a pool, you might consider staking via a CEX. For many crypto investors and users, the CEX route is more affordable, less risky and less technically complicated.

This is largely due to two key factors — the security of your funds, and customer support. Major CEXs are the largest crypto trading platforms in the industry. Their security setups and customer support provide key advantages over blockchains and DApps.

Any potential hacker attacks on a blockchain could lead to potential loss of funds. At the same time, you may use a custodial wallet on a major CEX so that your funds are at lower risk of being hacked. Naturally, CEXs aren’t immune to hacker attacks. However, the larger ones feature cybersecurity as a critical part of their business model. Following the insolvency of one of the world’s leading exchanges, 

, many major CEXs such as Bybit also include 

 (PoR) to make their holdings entirely transparent to the public. Thus, custodial wallets on these CEXs are relatively more secure as compared to noncustodial blockchain wallets.

Staking on a CEX may also help you access investment products with more stable and predictable rates and terms. For novice investors, it could also be a less complicated way to enter the world of crypto staking.

Additionally, staking on CEXs allows you to use coins that are normally not “stakeable” via a blockchain platform. Blockchain staking only works with cryptocurrencies based on PoS networks. For instance, the world’s largest crypto, 

 (BTC), isn’t based on a PoS network, so it can’t be staked on a blockchain.

Best Crypto Staking Coins for Highest Interest

The volatility of the crypto market means that there’s dynamic change when it comes to the best coins for earning interest. Regardless, the best interest rates in the staking game are normally available via CEX staking. Since CEXs offer a wide array of coins and products, there are often great deals available.

CEXs also offer staking for popular stablecoins — such as USDT, USDC, DAI and more — that can’t normally be staked on a blockchain. In addition, some of these coins have great rates on offer.

Given the volatility of the crypto industry, the key to earning the best crypto interest rates is to keep an eye on the market and source the best deals as they arise. 

One way to deal with the inherent volatility of crypto markets is to invest using stablecoins. The leading stablecoins — USDT, USDC and DAI — are readily available for staking on exchanges, though not directly on a blockchain.

Orbiter Finance started in 2021 as a cross-rollup bridging solution. In early 2024, the platform underwent a significant infrastructural upgrade by becoming a ZK-based rollup, while still retaining its focus on rollup-to-rollup asset transfers. The Orbiter Finance network is a smart contract–capable, 

 (EVM)–compatible ZK-rollup. It uses a network of Maker nodes to facilitate cross-rollup transfers. Makers establish addresses on participating chains and provide liquidity to allow Senders — users who execute cross-rollup transactions — to send assets efficiently and at low costs. By acting as 

 on both the destination and origin chains, Makers support efficient transfer activity via the Orbiter Finance platform.

Orbiter’s original platform architecture involves Makers using externally owned account (EOA) wallets. However, the project has announced plans to implement an Omni/Orbiter Account Abstraction (OAA) protocol to provide better cross-chain interoperability and lower the cost of rollup-to-rollup transfers. Once the protocol is fully implemented, Makers will transition to using OAA 

 (ZKPs) and hardware accelerators to ensure the security and high speed of asset transfers. Additionally, the ZK-based SPV technology lets the network quickly and securely verify the validity of transactions, minimizing the instances of failed transfers and validator challenges in these transfers.

To accommodate the myriad formats of ZKPs, the Orbiter Finance team is currently developing a proof aggregation layer that will process and standardize the various ZKPs to create a unified system for faster proof processing, thereby reducing transaction bottlenecks and further enhancing performance. Additionally, the aggregation of ZKPs will significantly reduce gas costs, improving the efficiency of the network as a whole.

At the core of the Orbiter Finance ecosystem is its Ethereum-linked Layer 2 rollup. As noted above, Orbiter was originally a bridging protocol that connected various rollup networks for efficient asset transfers. In early 2024, the platform announced the launch of the Orbiter Rollup to provide a more cost-effective and scalable environment for cross-rollup transactions. By having its own rollup platform, Orbiter can offer additional functions secured by technologies like ZKPs, SPV, OAAs and intent-based transactions.

The rollup also implements intent-based functionality. In the context of blockchain technology, intents are user-defined messages outlining desired transactions with specific conditions, e.g., “Carry out a swap from Ether to Bitcoin provided that a certain minimum acceptable swap rate is met.” An intent is converted into an executable transaction recorded in the blockchain ledger only when an option that satisfies its conditions is found. The Orbiter Rollup acts as an aggregation layer for cross-rollup user intent messages.

Orbiter Finance's product line also includes an inscription-focused cross-rollup protocol. Blockchain 

 — small bits of data that can be attached to crypto tokens to create unique digital artifacts — first became popular in 2023 with the launch of the Bitcoin-based

Meanwhile, 22% of the token's supply is reserved for the initial airdrop campaign. User eligibility snapshots for the campaign were taken on Jan 16, 2025 and Jan 19, 2025, for loyalty points and NFT usage data, respectively. Futures and options contracts are investment options with the potential to generate leveraged returns. Both are derivatives — financial instruments that derive their value from an underlying asset such as a stock, commodity or cryptocurrency. However, these two financial tools differ significantly and cater to different types of investors. So, which of them is the best for your investment goals?

 are agreements between two parties to buy or sell an underlying asset at a predetermined price and specific date in the future. Futures contracts allow investors to trade cryptocurrency without actually owning them. 

Crypto futures contracts share similarities to traditional futures contracts but use cryptocurrency as the underlying asset. But unlike their conventional counterparts, crypto futures are characterized by high volatility, leverage and 24/7 trading.

Crypto futures offer investors the potential to profit from rising and falling markets, making them an attractive investment opportunity for those who have a good understanding of the crypto market and are comfortable with the added risk.

Traders can take a long or short position, depending on their outlook. Long positions are a common practice for traders who predict a price increase; however, traders short a position in the hope of benefiting from the price declines.

If the position is held until maturity, the trader will gain or lose depending on the settlement price at maturity. At maturity, the settlement price is determined by the spot price of the underlying cryptocurrency. If the trader closes the futures position before maturity, the profit or loss depends on futures market prices at the time of unwinding.

Unlike spot or cash assets, futures typically operate "on margin," allowing traders to gain exposure to larger gains with relatively small capital.

Futures are typically (but not always) contracts based on the price of an asset at a specified future date (forward contract).

Like traditional futures contracts, standard crypto futures contracts govern trades in cryptocurrency at an agreed-upon price and predetermined date. They're similar to standard futures contracts in conventional markets with similar expiry and settlement mechanisms. 

Traditionally, expiration dates occur monthly (serial) or every three months (quarterly). At the time of expiration, the position is closed via a settlement process (more on that below). For example, the CME Group launched Bitcoin futures contracts that are cash-settled every three months in USD.

When trading standard futures, you should remember this: 

To do this, you must close your position in the active contract (front month) and open a corresponding position in a further forward futures contract (back month) 

Another thing to consider is that asset prices usually change over time. For this reason, futures contracts are priced using a forward curve.

For assets that are expected to rally over time, the price of forward contracts rises as they move further into the future (contango). 

Whereas for assets expected to plunge, the price of forward contracts falls as they move further into the future (backwardation). Because of this, the prices of different maturities (expiration dates) can fluctuate dramatically, making it challenging to manage a long-term position — especially when the contract is close to expiry (run-off).

Physical delivery futures are futures contracts where the underlying cryptocurrency is physically delivered to the buyer at the end of the contract. This type of contract is designed for those who want to take actual ownership of the cryptocurrency rather than just speculating on its price movements. 

In crypto, perpetual futures contracts are linear contracts with no expiration date. Like standard futures contracts in crypto, they allow traders to take a long or short position on the price of a cryptocurrency and profit from price changes without owning the underlying asset physically. However, unlike traditional futures, perpetual futures have no expiration date. 

Trading perpetual futures have two main advantages over traditional futures contracts:

For instance, the funding rates are regular payments (every 8 hours for Bybit products) provided to or by long or short traders, depending on the difference between perpetual contract markets and spot prices.

The perpetual futures funding mechanism incentivizes traders to buy futures when the price is low relative to the underlying spot market. By contrast, high funding rates incentivize traders to sell futures — this works by creating a risk-free arbitrage if the futures price deviates too far from the underlying.

For example, if the BTC funding rate is positive (longs pay to shorts), in theory, you could sell futures contracts in BTC and buy an equivalent amount of BTC in the spot market to hedge your position, at the same time collecting the funding fees. This arbitrage window ensures the futures price remains anchored to the underlying asset.
